As I drove across the I-40 bridge into Memphis, I was reassured: chances were slim that a massive earthquake would wrest the road from its supports, and plunge me more than a hundred feet into the murky Mississippi. Thanks to a recently completed $260 million seismic retrofit, the bridgea chokepoint for traffic in the central U.S.is now fortified. Its also decked out with strong-motion accelerometers and bookended by borehole seismometers to record convulsions in the earth.

To me the most astonishing thing about the article was how the author felt he had to throw in politics into a “science” article. He attacks the “right-wing” and drags in Alex Jones and Infowars, etc.
I guess he has to show his bosses that he’s still on their plantation, even though he has visited middle America.

Good grief y’all...it could be another 20, 50, 1000 years.
One detail left out of the earthquake/bridge conundrum is consideration of the approaches to the actual bridge structure. Many of the bridges will survive and still be unusable until the access on each end is rebuilt.
