ELKVIEW, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Emergency crews are working to rescue hundreds of people trapped at the Elkview Crossings Mall.

On Thursday night, the overpass bridge into the shopping annex gave-way to flood waters and is completely washed out.

The Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority says they are estimating about 500 people are stuck in the plaza.

At this time they are not sure how to rescue all of the people. One of the options they are considering is building a temporary bridge. But at this time it is unclear what they will do.

First they were trapped there because they could not go home, then the only bridge to that shopping center is washed out.

Only in West Virginia do they build a shopping center that has one way in and out and it's by way of a bridge.

It looks really bad there.

I think the big Wal-Mart in Asheville has only one way in and out over a bridge. I don’t think it’s that unusual.

I guess it could be worse. At least a mall shelters you from the elements, and food is available. And a kind-hearted store just might hand out pillows and such.

Imagine instead being trapped at an outdoor Hillary Clinton rally.

At least at the Hillary Rally there would be few enough people to be manageable.

I had worked on a real estate deal in West Virginia and was stunned at how the developers had ignored the obvious flood risk and had no credible evacuation plans.

Much of the population of the state is in valleys adjacent to rivers and creeks surrounded by hills and mountains.

They are considering a temporary bridge. Back in Scouts, each of my boys helped to build one. My girls all built rope bridges at home after seeing what the boys had done.

Went to Logan High. They called it on “the Island”, manmade on the confluence of the Kanawha River and another one whose name I forget. Flat land in Logan County was virtually non-existent and it was more cost effective to build LHS on a manmade island than on a steep hillside with no parking to boot. It was a super school in early ‘60s, with spacious athletic fields, gym, electronics lab and auditorium and one way onto and one way off of the Island. In all the flooding that those mountains produced every now and again there was never anyone stranded. If there had been there were plenty of landings for emergency Choppers. One of the few times I’ve seen when government did it better than private enterprise.

Just checked a satellite map.
Looks like two bridges go to that mall.
There’s a hill behind the mall, wondering why people couldn’t be sent up the hill to a road on the top of it.

It also looks like people could walk around the flooded creek and get to the highway. Someone with a chainsaw could probably clear a path in half an hour. I used google earth and measure the distance from the parking lot to 79...300 yards.

What a great time to loot!

Well, at least until it’s time to get in the rescue boat.

Good thing the bridge didn’t take the electric and water with it. I guess they could watch the elk until help arrives.

So at least they won't be resorting to cannibalism too soon.
