A Florida police officer said Tuesday that he and a group of five of six other officers surrounded the bathroom where Omar Mateen was holed up, but were told to wait until a SWAT team arrived.
Belle Isle, Fla. Police Officer Brandon Cornwell, 25, told The Washington Post that he and the officers entered Pulse Orlando as bullets flew and clubgoers screamed. He said his group aimed their rifles and waited about 15 or 20 minutes because they were told not to engage the bathroom area. Cornwell said he never even saw Mateen.
Federal authorities said Monday that police engaged the shooter inside the club at about 2:08 a.m. Cornwalls account to The Post offers a first glimpse into the efforts to take down Mateen, who murdered 49 people before being killed by officers in a hail of gunfire.

Domestic Benghazi??
Bathroom , I thought they said he ran out a hole in a wall blasting away like Rambo
There have been a number of articles stating how the first officers on the scene made it to firing positions on the bathroom area and were then told to wait for SWAT. Okay.... SWAT show up, how long did SWAT delay taking out the jihadi?????? 2 or 3 hours?
You must be patient, the Ministry of Truth will amend the historical record to portray the reality that the Inner Party wants once they have considered all the ramifications.
Until then the historical record is considered "fluid"...
My local PD on a town of 45K or so has their SWAT officers carry their essential SWAT gear in their car, if needed they can respond to nearby staging area in their car and respond from their. All they need is one officer to go to the station to get the BearCat and the other gear they carry on it if necessary. They can have a SWAT team ready in 8-10 minutes, maybe a bit longer if the BearCat is needed.
Anyone know how many OPD officers carry some basic SWAT gear (helmets, vests, etc), rifles, etc, in their cars?
Conveniently, every Orlando PD/county sheriff talk group on the county radio system is encrypted.
Three hours. Suspicious, for sure.
You could do what most major cities do.
SWAT officers always have thier equipment while on duty in other positions. An immediate recall and the are ready to roll in 15 minutes.
15 minutes, which was about the response time of the SWAT team.
I am not completely convinced of Orlando PDs culpability yet, but I must admit that the evidence increasingly indicates an utterly inadequate initial response.
Your statement sounds an awful lot like this quote from someone else..... “I don’t know all the facts, but it appears the police acted stupidly.”
As someone who says they have been there, you should know better. You should also know and understand that the public story and narrative rarely capture the dynamic incident you just lived. Everyone has the right answer - every time - after the overall scenario parameters are known..... except those on scene in the live scenario, but you should know that given your pedigree shouldn’t you?
Jihad Johnny said he was wearing an explosives vest and that kind of changes things (especially in an smaller enclosed room) that would amplify damage to hostages. On top of that, I am not sure how much more damage he did after he barricaded himself in the bathroom. I had previously heard it was not much nor did he shoot much after the initial officer(s) drove him in there. The radio traffic said they were not hearing gunfire while they maintained cover on the bathroom and the negotiator was talking off and on. Gunfire is over and explosives present with unsub(s) = much different problem.
I am sure in hindsight that lessons will be learned and passed on. Why don’t you read the words of the SWAT commander on scene (link below)..... Does not sound like they sat around as people died to me, but that is the beauty of being the Monday Morning QB isn’t it? Every pass is perfect and scores a touchdown from the comfort of your recliner. You don’t have the warzone to cope with or the constant barrage of questions and pressure.....
I am 100% sure they made some mistakes. I am 100% sure they will scrutinize themselves and learn from those and pass on the lessons. I am 100% sure your team would have made some mistakes also. The truth will come out, but it will NEVER represent the picture they faced in the moment.
I’ve also heard that a number of the hostages were killed by cops, not Mateen.
If thats the guys official story, that SWAT team response sounds like a clusterfuck.
Three hours to get the bad guy, he came out to them when they knocked a hole in the wall, they never did go in the building when he was alive.
Exactly the way it is supposed to happen.
Possibly an illegal order to back off from that restroom. You are exactly right in everything you said.
I’m 100% sure that if officers back off at the sign of danger, in this case a possible explosive device, they will never save anyone. Officers put themselves in danger as a matter of their daily responsibilities. Do you work for a Florida law enforcement organization? You sound like the public info person for a local dept there.
“No, but at 2 am on a Saturday night, it takes 20 minutes for a SWAT team to arrive.”
20 minutes to arrive, and then 2.5 hours to decide what to do.
