An 8-year-old boy in Colorado died this month after a local pharmacy made a massive error in his medication dosage.

Jake Steinbrecher overdosed on his usual medication of Clonidine used to treat his sensory processing disorder — a drug his parents didn't want him to take to begin with.

...

"Drugging our child definitely wasn't something we wanted to do," his mother Caroline Steinbrecher told the Daily News.

"The Clonidine was a compromise I could live with, because it was a non-addictive drug," she added.

Steinbrecher said that the drug is usually considered safe for children under the age of 8, but not at 1,000 times a normal dosage.

...

The night he passed, Steinbrecher remembered taking Jake to dance class where he practiced for an upcoming recital.

"That was honestly so important to him, to make it to that practice," she told the News.

"He died before he was able to perform."

To remember Jake's gift for dance, Steinbrecher created the Jake Steinbrecher Dance Fund...

Milligram vs. microgram. Different by a factor of 1,000.

YUP ,, just like they now require legible printed instructions on scripts because of doctors handwriting the rules need to change to make MICRO more distinct ... maybe spelled out ,, maybe bolded ... I’ve seen this error too many times.

Lazy “parents” that thought they should have a zombie for a child. Medical professionals should be ashamed of their willingness to create these zombies. There should be a criminal investigation into these drugging’s of children to turn them into zombies.

It is statements like yours that give conservatives a bad name.

How about superbowl MVP Von Miller? Was he acting like a “man” when he was on “Dancing with the stars?”

The grieving mother set up a fund in the name of her poor little boy in the hopes he would be remembered by helping other little boys and girls afford dance lessons. And you are making fun of him and her.

I’m ashamed you even post into the same forum I do.

“Yet another drug to treat ADHD (which is basically the diagnosis that a boy is behaving like a boy; and today’s society will not tolerate that).”

Apparently he needed it for his “boy behavior” dance classes and dance recital. /s

I understand your mistrust of regulations. I mistrust them, too.

My daughter is an operating room nurse. They check things. Then they make a list of things they’ve checked and give the list to another nurse who checks them, too. Been operated on lately? I had to write on my left knee “ACL replacement, left knee” before they took me into the operating room.

All the best medical facilities are implementing redundant checking procedures to eliminate human error. Hell, at my local small town Walmart pharmacy, a second pharmicist checks the order filled out by the first.

It is good practice that saves lives. It would be a good regulation.

“Except in this case the deceased was not acting like a boy. He took dance classes.”

Do you really think that’s actually the choice of the 8 year old child?

Mabye, maybe not. The overdose occurred November of last year. The death was due to an autoimmune responser beieved to be related to the overdose.

Almost happened to me. Get my prescription drugs by mail, one day I saw the pills were a different shape and color, checked them on line and they were DOUBLE what I was supposed to take.
Broke each in half to use even though the label said “Take ONE Tablet daily”.

Thanks, that’s informative.

This reminds me that I need to call around and see if I can get my daughter’s extended release Clonidine filled for less than $160/60 ea. Her psychiatrist gave me a paper prescription instead of filing it electronically.

Not sure why you think I was making fun or why you are upset. When you were eight did any of the boys want to be dancers? Of course not. They want to be ballplayers and cops. They ran and climbed and fought. That is boys acting like boys.
