We did something *almost* as dumb. Found a painted turtle that a car had hit, smashed shell in several places. Took him home; aunt pediatrician, sanitized the wound; diagnosis obviously above her pay-grade. Found a vet who specialized in reptiles. LSS, brought the turtle in, vet said he could *help*; we left the turt, got a call the next day from the vet to come and get him. $300 later, we took him home with an IV contraption the vet had made for a drip. FFw, turtle recovered and went off to live a *happy* [I hope]life in the swamp.
Dumb? Yes. Very. Would I do it again? Nope.
