The BBC has warned English football fans not to dress as crusaders when attending the Euro 2016 tournament this summer as they might cause offence to Muslims.
The advice comes via their iWonder website, aimed at a younger audience, which asks such pressing questions as Was Shakespeare a feminist? and How green is my commute?
Posing the question: Is it wrong to dress as a crusader for an England match? the answer appears to be a resounding yes.
Crusaders were the perpetrators of violent attacks across Europe and the Middle East on Muslims, Jews and pagans, the website intones, suggesting that fans may simply want to don the English flag instead, as this has nothing to do with crusaders or what they stood for.
And although it cant help musing: The English flag used to have connotations with far-right nationalism, it is forced to concede that: Today the flag is flown by local authorities and individuals in a purely patriotic sense.

Offends ME as Well
Quit Dressing and Start Acting like MEN
Sure thing, muslims can pose with Christian heads they’ve chopped off, but display a cross on your shirt and YOU’RE the antagonist. Time for a cleansing.
The Crusades were, I say again, defensive --- comparable to the landing of the Allies at Normandy during WWII.
People say, "well, weren't they conquering the Holy Land?" Truth be told, they were trying to RE-conquer it, as Muslims had been waging war and slaughtering pilgrims in the region for hundreds of years. The Muslims had already conquered 2/3 of historic Christendom by fire and sword! God's Battalions - The Case for the Crusades by Rodney Stark lays out the history.
Historian Thomas Madden puts it this way:
It is often assumed that the central goal of the Crusades was forced conversion of the Muslim world. Nothing could be further from the truth. From the perspective of medieval Christians, Muslims were the enemies of Christ and His Church. It was the Crusaders task to defeat and defend against them. That was all. They sure don't teach that in school, do they!?
And just in case you missed it, </sarc>.
My HS, and kids current school is a former Catholic school with the Crusader mascot. There were rumblings of replacing it a few years ago. They are trying to recruit international students and afraid they may offend. They would lose a lot of cash if they ever did that. I was quite pleased last night when a student from China gave the opening address at the class night for the graduating class, ended her speech with a loud “Go Crusaders”.
My Norski Grandpa had many songs and poems that the main theme was “don’t count on a dozen cowards to help you, just ask a single Norwegian to fix it”
He measured 6’ 6” when he was 70 ... I don’t know how tall he was when he was younger.
I watched him pull a wood fencepost out of the ground, spin it to remove the staples and barb wire and hit a Stallion right between the eyes that was attacking my sister ... took him all of 3 seconds and he was 69 years old at the time... knocked the Stallion out cold and had his pocket knife out to finish the job and my Dad stopped him, Dad just said “GLUE” Grandpa just said “SOON”.
And he Yodeled from hill tops (had quite a following, Grandma was English and not amused by the bevy of not so young loveleys Grandpa assembled)
So if the Crusaders attacked Jews, Muslims and Pagans, why are the BBC staff only worried about offense to Muslims?
It is my Understanding that the Crusaders were the only thing that put a stop to round one of the invasion of Islam. A time in which Muslims murdered, raped, tortured, and enslaved the native people where ever they went. Notice how there is no mention of any of that and also how it is the same thing they are doing today.
Yep! Sounds good to me!
Let them be offended.
The Crusades were not only justified, it’s a shame that Europe didn’t finish the job.
He sounded awesome! I know you miss him.
If it hadn't been for the Crusaders, Europe would have been Muslim for the last 900 years. The Crusaders were chasing Muslims out of Christian areas that they had captured. If Charles Martel and his ilk had a few modern weapons, Muslims would be history.
That was a long time ago and I was a child, my Grandfather passed the next year, my Father turns 84 in August and we still tell that fencepost story ... I tell my Grand-kids some of the little rhymes (or whatever they were) when he complained about the English and those that spoke it ...
“They used to call it yam and now they call it yellie”
He was my Mothers Father and my Dad thought the World of him, those two agreed on everything except horses and they could argue about Horses for hours, walking, sitting or just resting their arms on a fence rail pointing fingers at the field.
Good point. After 1000 years of marrying their 6 year old first cousin its a miracle they can find their way to the stadium.
Wow. My eyes are welling up. Carry on that memory and traditions. All we have left.
