If it is true that slaves from Africa were illegally imported up until the Civil War, then I can see the possibility that an African born slave was still alive in 1930.

Slaves were certainly imported illegally after the ban - it's one of the businesses Jean Lafitte was in - but I'd want to see solid, documentary evidence of slave importation in the 1850s.
