The Coast Guard is a part of DHS and spends a big chunk of their time harassing recreational boaters on inland waterways. I hardly consider them the equivalent of the Marines.

Jack - Don’t be too quick to write off the US Coast Guard Sailors. From uscg.mil: “The Coast Guard’s first major participation in the Pacific war was at Guadalcanal. Here the service played a large part in the landings on the islands. So critical was their task that they were later involved in every major amphibious campaign during World War II. During the war, the Coast Guard manned over 350 ships and hundreds more amphibious type assault craft. It was in these ships and craft that the Coast Guard fulfilled one of its most important but least glamorous roles during the war—that is getting the men to the beaches. The initial landings were made on Guadalcanal in August 1942, and this hard-fought campaign lasted for nearly six months. Seven weeks after the initial landings, during a small engagement near the Matanikau River, Signalman First Class Douglas Albert Munro, died while rescuing a group of marines near the Matanikau River. Posthumously awarded a Medal of Honor, he lived up to the Coast Guard’s motto—”Semper Paratus.”” I became aware of these facts some time ago.
By the by as well, the US Coast Guard used to be part of the Dept of Transportation but in war time was transferred to the “War Dept.”
We tend to forget the USMS - US Merchant Seaman. My late mother lost a cousin, age 19, when his merchant ship was torpedoed off the coast of Great Britain during World War II. If one wishes to check the record, I believe there were significant losses then.

I do understand that the Coast Guard had a very different role in the WW2 Era and beyond, but that doesn’t change the fact that they are now part of DHS and have a very different mission.
A lot of Americans kill themselves from eating poorly, and the resulting illnesses they end up with. Bloomberg supporters have a regulatory plan to fix that too: you know no big sodas, no salt on tables.
As your advice to "follow the law", that's an ignorant comment. Simply because I don't appreciate the Coast Guard's current ridiculous over-patrol of inland water-ways does not logically imply that I drink and boat. I do not.
In fact I've sailed from Long Island to Bermuda, in a 37 foot boat, as the navigator and crew. I know more about seamanship than 90% of the Coasties I've met who could not navigate by the stars if their lives depended on it.
Maybe you are unaware of what the CG is up to.

I deeply respect Americans who have served in our armed forces, and those who have died in the wars against foreign enemies throughout our history. I refuse to allow the honor they have earned in blood to be tarnished by jack-booted thugs of any stripe, even those in the DHS wearing the uniforms of the once-great Coast Guard.
Agree. But they still serve and spend time away from their families.
