did any one force the chew in his mouth every day?
Translation: they paid me to endorse their product, and I took their money, and now I (my family actually) want even more money !
Personal responsibility? This is the age of Obama. We need tort reform. Loser pays. Enough of this crap. And I grew up in SD and worshipped Mr Padre.
Not while there are millions to be made.
I checked and this guy was born in 1960, and federal tobacco warning labels came into law in 1966. So unless he started smoking before he was six years old, I think it’s personal responsibility.
Tony Gwynn was a class act.
Not much different than all the suits against the tobacco companies for smoking. It’s a question of whether they knew the risk but covered it up and didn’t make disclosure.
This shows how out of it I am, I didn’t even know he died until now.
He was actually one of my kids’ favorite players when they were growing up (and mine), so it’s sad this is how he met his end. Seemed like a nice guy.
There are FReepers and zealots who maintain that dipping is safe.
Its not the tobacco company’s responsibility. Tobacco is a legal substance in the US just like alcohol and guns.
I absolutely think Tony Gwynn was one of the best hitters ever, but no one made him use tobacco! I don’t see how they could win this suit!
His choice. I still choose to smoke so, my decision. Nobody to point fingers at but me if somerhing goes to crap.
Gotta be kidding me. If you don’t know that using tobacco is bad for you, you’d have to be living on a desert island or something.
Yup. Warning on chaw have been around forever, plus they were around old timers who chewed for ddcades and they saw exactly what that did to their teeth, jaws and gums, as well as cancers.
Find the guy who stuffed it into Gwynn’s mouth all those years and sue him for everything he’s got.
If I’m on the jury I vote “not on red penny”.
