On May 22, 1856, in the United States Congress, Representative Preston Brooks attacked Senator Charles Sumner with a walking cane in retaliation for a speech given by Sumner two days earlier. The beating nearly killed Sumner and it drew a sharply polarized response from the American public on the subject of the expansion of slavery in the United States. It has been considered symbolic of the "breakdown of reasoned discourse"[1] that eventually led to the American Civil War.

Shoulda pulled out a heater...and Goetzed the guy.
But wait a minute. You mean there wasn’t no bipartisanship or Gang of 8 back then?
I didn’t have my glasses on, and for a moment I thought it said Charles Schumer. LOL
Obviously caused by Donald Trump and his violent rhetoric!
Slavery was a scourge then and now
“The Caning of Senator Charles Sumner (R).”
At first glance, I was ecstatic. Then I actually read it.
What I thought I saw was Senator Charles SCHUMER. Instead it was Senator Charles SUMNER.
What a letdown. I was so happy, now the whole day is shot.
Crap!
OMG ROFL ROFL I saw it like that also ROFL I thought YES!!! LOL
Yes. We should demand reparations from the blacks who sold their brethren into slavery.
Sumner was a Prima donna as per his own ex-wife. He probably deserved the caning as do most officious intermeddlers.
I started reading Charles Sumner’s “Crime Against Kansas” speech. It is awesome, 106 pages. It took him two days to deliver. Everyone should read it, not only for the historical context but also for the eloquence of the oratory. They certainly knew how to give speeches in those days.
Also no mention that Sumner was a radical anti-slavery Republican
The crazed old lunatic.
Sumner was the victim.
Nobody needs reparations. I doubt if any are still alive. Other Africans sold them into slavery, and people here purchased them and owned them.
It was indeed a scourge. And the short sightedness of those southerners has caused America no end of misery that last to this day. That’s the lesson.
Evidently Senators were exempt from assault and battery charges.
“Also no mention that Sumner was a radical anti-slavery Republican”
As opposed to a pro-slavery republican?
Proto Bernie supporter...??
