And, um, there is this thing called a parking brake. We used to call them emergency brakes.
Have you ever actually tried to use the parking/emergency brake to stop the car? I’ve experienced it, a former friend thought it was funny, pulled the brake lever and the back wheels locked up. The car fishtailed nearly out of control before I could get to a stop. I put the now-former friend out of the car. Not funny, not funny at all. Flat-spotted some nice V-rated tires, too.
Then there’s Bob Newhart’s driving instructor: “The other way of stopping?” “You throw it in reverse.”

Many moons ago, I drove a lumber carrier that was on tracks. No brake pedal, The way you stopped it was exactly that, throw it in reverse. The big iron wheels would start spinning backwards. Not too hard, once you got the hang of it.

My college roomie back in the 60’s had a Chrysler 300 with the auto tranny that had the push buttons on the dash to select the gears. He LOVED to put it in neutral, tromp on the gas pedal, then hit the DRIVE button. The entirecar would literally shudder for about 10 seconds, then there was a huge THUNK as the tranny dropped into gear, then it would peal rubber

Look. I had a brown A4. It was a fairly good car, basically a Volkswagen, one tenth as fun as an M3 and looked like a suppository but perfectly fine. They are fine cars. I’ve owned lots of cars.

On Toyota with push button start the button is also used to stop. Emergency stop hold button down for eight seconds if I remember correctly

He could certainly put it in neutral, and coast to a stop. It wouldn't actually go into "Park", it would just grind against the "Park" pawl until the car stopped.
I'm assuming he was somehow stuck with some sort of condition keeping the throttle open. It could maybe have been a stuck cruise control, or a stuck throttle. Otherwise he could just let up on the foot control, and it would also coast to a stop. Putting it in neutral certainly beats ramming a police car, even if the engine is ruined from over revving.
He had lots of options (in this order): let up on the gas, turn off the key, put it in neutral, step on the brakes (and hold it hard until the car stops, so the brakes don't overheat).
