And the contemptible excuse for a mayor, DumblASSio, wants Albany to give him mayoral control on a permanent basis! A weapon doesn't have to be a gun or a knife. Just last week I had 2 different students brandish meter sticks around my face, narrowly missing my eyes. I've had students with broken pieces of mirrors, razor blades, you name it--all potentially lethal weapons. And this moron DumblASSio wants to take out the remaining metal detectors and threaten the safety agents at schools for reporting accurate numbers of weapons confiscated. For that alone he should be thrown in jail.

How diverse are the kids bringing in the weapons? What group brings more guns?

Wow - that’s beyond belief...yet it is not.
Maybe it’s time for you to leave, or retire if you can. Those in control don’t want it things to get better. Very likely the opposite is true.
In terms of discipline, insane political correctness ties your hands, I’m sure.

“Department of Educations new discipline policy, which discourages student suspensions”
They lose Federal matching $$ if the kid’s aren’t in their chair.
So, screw the discipline in our “no consequences” society, where the only crime is being politically incorrect.

“... a 4-inch razor blade....a 10½-inch meat cleaver...”
A 4-inch what? Could that possibly be a straight razor? Where would a kid in NYC get a straight razor? Where would a kid in NYC get a meat cleaver? Who keeps a meat cleaver around these days except a butcher or restaurant or maybe a hunter?

I assume that the students who waved the meter sticks were suspended/expelled for both your and the other students’ safety. Oops, upon reading the article I see that punishing students for this kind of behavior is limited to their being issued a discipline card. I can’t see the point of trying to teach in that kind of environment. I know that some and hopefully most of your students want a good education, but how they can receive one while the ferals are running the show is beyond me.

The vast majority of these weapons are brought for self-defense.

This is exactly why I now teach in extremely rural school district. I spent ten years in an inner city hell. I tell the people that I work with now that they have no idea how good they have it.

I salute you for sticking it out there. No power on earth, and no amount of money, would move me to teach in such an environment. Nor would I have any success in reaching any of the denizens such a place. But I have had a few close ones myself and I teach in a rural school, where such things, while uncommon, are not unheard of. Good luck to you, and hope you survive the rest of the school year.
