Fearing Trump, some Democrats up pressure on Sanders to exit

Pressure is mounting on Bernie Sanders to end his campaign for president, with Democratic Party leaders raising alarms that his continued presence in the race is undermining efforts to beat presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump this fall.

The new concerns come after Sanders’ recent wins over front-runner Hillary Clinton in Indiana and West Virginia. While those victories have provided his supporters a fresh sense of momentum heading into next week’s primaries in Kentucky and Oregon, they did almost nothing to help Sanders cut into Clinton’s nearly insurmountable lead in the delegates who will decide their party’s nomination.

“I don’t think they think of the downside of this,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., a Clinton supporter who hosted the 2008 meeting that brokered post-primary peace between Clinton and then-Illinois Sen. Barack Obama.

“It’s actually harmful because she can’t make that general-election pivot the way she should,” Feinstein said. “Trump has made that pivot.”

Clinton, her aides and supporters have largely resisted calling on Sanders to drop out, noting that she fought her 2008 primary bid again Obama well into June. But now that Trump has locked up the Republican nomination, they fear the billionaire businessman is capitalizing on Sanders’ decision to remain in the race by echoing his attacks and trying to appeal to the same independent, economically frustrated voters that back the Vermont senator.

“I would just hope that he would understand that we need to begin consolidating our vote sooner rather than later,” said New York Rep. Steve Israel, a Clinton backer and former chief of efforts to elect Democrats to the House. “Democrats cannot wait too long.”

Nope. We need Hillary to withdraw, Pedo Joe to be nominated and Sanders to run as an independent. Trump vs. Biden vs. Sanders is the dream.

Yup. Contrary to media hopes, I expect the Republican convention in Cleveland to be a showcase of unity and have through-the-roof ratings as an entertainment extravaganza, while the Democrat convention in Philadelphia is going to look more like Chicago 1968 as Bernie’s supporters get shoved aside to make way for Hillary’s coronation.

Yes, but it's her turn. That's all that matters. Just like is was Jeb's turn on the republican side. It was all settled long ago.

And if it weren't for Trump that's what we'd be facing.

If the Democrats feared The Donald as much as they claim, they would ditch Herself, not Bernie. Herself is absolutely the most low-energy, incompetent and untrustworthy person they could have put up, and it shows in just about every public gathering at which Herself is getting up and screeching out her calls for nastiness and spite. Herself simply cannot stir the kind of enthusiasm that follows Bernie just about everywhere he goes.

The Democrats’ best ticket for this year is Bernie at the top, and Herself as VP. And it would be the one lone best chance for Herself to ever get on a track to finally occupy the Oval Orifice on her own.

Bernie would have a life expectancy of about six weeks, before a mysterious incident of Arkancide (which of course would never be solved) effectively puts Herself in charge. Of course, with the multitude of health problems Herself now enjoys in her dotage, it would be largely a hollow triumph.

But the committee that would rule in her stead could quickly consolidate all the proposed and declared objectives of the essentially transformed territory once known as “the United States of America”.

IMHO, mr trump is not very conservative and thus not really what we need. But he will Shread the Shrew — assuming she manages to buy the D nomination — and that show should be very, VERY entertaining. Almost worth the price of admission, IMHO.

I disagree. Bernie has a better chance than Hill. But Trump will beat either.

Right you are, grania.

The Sanders people are as tired of the corruption and crony capitalism and endless wars as many of us are.

A move by Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard to publically shun Hillary in favor of Bernie a few months ago was huge. Ms. Gabbard is an Iraq war vet (among other accomplishments) and not to be fooled with.

These United States are at a crossroads, believe me.

I said the same thing a while ago but that would not work, Bernie may be a lot of things but he wants to put more socialism into the US the right way, through congress and he does respect the 2nd amendment, Hillary on the other hand, she admitted she is far left of him and does not respect even the 2nd, that wont work.

With all the talk about a Republican contested convention, it’s actually still possible the Dems will have one instead. That’s the best case scenario for us.

The Democrats would be much better off putting pressure on Hillary to exit.

Hillary is the anointed one. It is her turn. Just like in the Republican side it was suppose to be Jeb Bush. However the voters said otherwise. Hillary is getting a lot of push back but the stack is in favor of the insider and that is Hillary.

Instead of getting Sanders to quit it’s Hitlery they should be pressuring to quit. Sanders does much better against Trump than she does.
