Great article, and I am going to have to reread Crime and Punishment after my first read 30+ years ago.

However,

The epilogue fails, I think, because it relies wholly on the religious answer, as if the prosaic one, worked out so meticulously for so many pages, did not exist.

The prosaic answer may well exist, but it isn't sufficient. Without the religious aspect, the prosaic answer will wither and die. You canot have St. Therese, the Little Flower, offering up small things in a big way without having something bigger still to offer it for.
