We all have cracked jokes about the United States Postal Service, especially about their workers “going postal.” Most postal workers you’ve encountered are probably lethargic, short-tempered, half-asleep, or just plain rude. Well, that could be due to their work environment. These people are miserable, which is what the USPS painfully discovered when they gave Gallup to conduct this survey at the cost of $1.8 million (via Inside Sources):
The topline results were obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request after the USPS declined to provide the data to InsideSources when asked in January.
Postal workers reported strong job dissatisfaction, and in comparison to other organizations surveyed by Gallup, USPS employees say they rarely receive recognition for good work; their supervisors don’t care for them as people; they don’t feel their job is important; they lack opportunities to learn and grow, and their fellow employees are not committed to doing quality work.
A spokesperson for USPS says the organization was disappointed with the results. “Clearly, there is much room for improvement.”

Multiple, powerful unions and separate contracts that must be negotiated & administered. Management that can’t make a move without Congressional interference / approval — close unprofitable offices & other facilities, adjust delivery days & times, set rates, etc. Supposedly a semi-private enterprise, but with the jackboot of massive govt. on its neck.

I have one good friend who works for the USPS. He got the job after going through a lot of difficulty in the wake of 9/11 as far as job loss. His longtime employer went under, then he had a series of awful jobs just to keep insurance, his wife has medical conditions and cannot work. He was thrilled to get the job at the USPS, decent pay, great medical coverage, pension. Does he “like” the job? It’s a heck of a lot better than struggling and he’s able to provide a decent standard of living for himself and his wife, as well as cover her medical conditions. There are quite a few dysfunctional people who remain employed there that make it somewhat difficult, according to him, the different levels of counseling make it nearly impossible to terminate problem employees. But, he just deals with it. I think a lot of the complaining would stop, if these people knew how good they have it. They don’t. People like my friend do, but he’s in the distinct minority.
So they’re all gonna go postal?
USPS was a good plan by Ben Franklin for its day but it is just about obsolete by now. I hate to give them ideas but compared to Fedex or UPS the price of sending a letter by USPS is dirt cheap. Staff seldom realize what it costs to “Fedex it” and Fedex likes it that way.
The USPS, compared to the private carriers like Fedex, supports a huge infrastructure for what seems to be mostly junk mail. The flat rate boxes are a really good deal and I’ve wondered how they could afford them.
Huge infrastructure, well paid employees, great benefits and relatively low prices. No wonder they are losing money. Time for a massive restructuring in services or just cut them out. I can live without the USPS and a mailbox.
The problem is that the post office has made more affirmative action hires and promotions than any other organization in the history of the country. Most of the employees at the post office near we live are recent immigrants and speak broken English. The guy in charge is an obnoxious black guy to whom he term moron would be a compliment. The workers there who are helpful seem terribly demoralized.
So, is your JOB responsible for your personal happiness? Is not happiness a DECISION? And you can be content peeling potatoes for the Lord? Then why is this news?? “The USPS should be the source of your personal happiness.” Is that their motto?
I have two friends who are mailmen. They are always complaining about their bosses. I think the politics at the Post Office has been worse than some places for a long time. But is it all that different from any other place? I doubt it.
This should be a fairly straightforward job. Put pieces of paper and packages in order and deliver them. Keep your mouth shut and do what you are told. Your workday will end at the appointed time and you take a paycheck home. Voila!
How many of these loser supervisors are affirmative action minorities, who are there to cash their fat, undeserved paychecks and make like miserable for their workers?

Apply that same sentiment to just about any gubment job or “organization” in the country and you’ve summed up our situation. Extend it to a lot of private organizations as well. You can’t have 13% of the population all filling upper decile qualification jobs and be successful as a nation. The math just does not work out.
Yes, the PO delivers junk mail, ads, a few bills, letters from grandma. Not packages, not most bills, not letters. WHY do we subsidize them? WHY are they so unhappy? That might be our fault as well??
With a mailbox full of advertisements, flyers and paper spam I think I know who is keeping the USPS in existence ....... marketing !
You know what would cheer them up? Another diversity program!
Back on 4/16, I mailed a paperback book via media rate with tracking from Rome, NY that was going to Indian River, Mi. The package went from here, to Warrendale, Pa., then all the way across the country to Bell Gardens, Ca., sat three days there before being sent back the other way to it's final destination. It finally arrived at the new owner's door on 4/25. The whole process took 9 days. No wonder the post office is broke. They spend mucho bucks on transportation fuel, making your packages take the scenic route across America.
Yes, along with a 5 hour instructional video on "Transgender Bathroom Policies."
Not to mention the benefits. Also, the postmasters, and supervisors in the USPS are eligible for bonuses each year too, so it pays well in other ways.
I don’t want anyone scanning my mail.
Many things still need to exist physically and be delivered physically.
