Fifty years ago, Ferrari and Ford engaged in an epic battle for sports car racing supremacy.
In IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship qualifying on Saturday at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, a new chapter in the storied battle began. The No. 68 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 488 GTE in the hands of Daniel Serra knocked the No. 67 Ford GT driven by Ryan Briscoe off the class pole position on his final lap to secure the top starting spot in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class for Sundays two-hour Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix.

Perhaps Ryan Briscoe, knowing the Ford GT is faster, preferred to follow the Ferrari until it was time to overtake him for the win!!! Let’s hope that was his strategy at any rate, LOL.

2. Ford GT
3. Ford GT
4. Corvette C7R
5. Ferrari 488
6. Porsche 911 RSR

Well since my wife owns a Corvette C7 (without the R), I guess you can figure out which car I will be rooting for.

Donald Trump was driving the Ferrari. He must have been, it won.

The Ferrari qualified first in class. The race just started so no one has won yet.

The new GT is what 2 years old out of the box designed by a small team in a secure storage area. Production engine ( 3.5l Eco-Boost ) aka "Truck engine" tweaked to the max. 2nd place for a relatively new race car? Nothing to sneeze at...

The Ford GT race cars are brand new this year. The production cars are not out yet. They had to get waivers in IMSA and the European series because they are not yet “homologated” by having enough production cars to qualify for their GTLM class. They had problems at the Daytona 24 hour race, but have been improving.

About 20 minutes left in the race. The two Ford GTs are in the lead followed by one of the Corvettes then the Ferrari back by 55 seconds. The first three still need to make a final pit stop. It will be a close finish.

At 10 minutes left it looks like the Ford GTs are trying to make it to the end without a pit stop and the Ferrari is third 12 seconds behind.

Exciting finish. One of the Ford GTs had to stop for fuel with about 2 minutes left. It was Ford, Corvette, Ford. Then the Corvette had to stop for fuel. The final GTLM.....Ford, Ford and Factory Porsche 911 RSR. The first win for the new Ford GT.

This race was run on the same Michelin tires that will be run at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June. This lets the teams test them in advance. The Ford GTs ran very well on the tires and will be running at Le Mans so this is good news.

Then again, if I could build a street rod, I’d start with a 1940 Ford coupe.

It was a good shake down run for the big race.

Oh, and the “truck engine” apparently did well.

The 1960's Ford GT40 also used a truck engine. The new one:
