Apple had been increasing revenues every quarter since 2003 - a remarkable run. There was no need to kill yourself over the first bad quarter in 13 years.
Were they taking the employee's word for being male, or did they actually check inside the pants? It's California after all.

Boing! A light just went on in my head. I've wondered why my weather app on the I-Phone gave me my location, New York City and Cupertino. I'd never heard of Cupertino and assumed it was a place in Italy or Spain...Didn't know Apple was from there.
