Cruz has always supported “life of the mother” as an exception. But IIRC, the interpretation is verrrrrry broad.

I think that it is the “HEALTH of the mother” that had very broad interpretation.

As long as there are doctors who don’t take their Hippocratic oaths seriously, that can always be interpreted broadly, because it will always fall to the doctors to determine if a woman’s life is threatened. Just like you can always find a doctor to write you a “medical marijuana” prescription (for a price), you will always be able to find a doctor who will say your life is threatened by a pregnancy (for a price).

Ronald Reagan as president also supported the "health of mother" exception (which I admit is very broad and widely abused.) Reagan did not support the exceptions for rape or incest, though every GOP presidential candidate since has supported all three exceptions.

Reagan later deeply regretted the very liberal abortion law he signed while governor of California, as well.
