Bingo! From what I understand, gators really like those marshy areas.
I avoid my favorite walking trail after a heavy rain, as a number of areas are flooded, and water moccasins inhabit the area.
As to the tragic event, Mr. Darwin tried to warn us.

I live in the Tampa area and there is no way possible I would go into a murky deep retention pond in the middle of the night...
You have no idea where the car is, you are not equipped to go diving into the water...and of course who knows what is living in there and what other crap and junk has been tossed into it.....
Even on a clear sunny day in best conditions, you would need a professional diver to find the car...
