You forgot the cottonmouths and alligators that frequently inhabit these lakes around here.

Bingo! From what I understand, gators really like those marshy areas.

I avoid my favorite walking trail after a heavy rain, as a number of areas are flooded, and water moccasins inhabit the area.

As to the tragic event, Mr. Darwin tried to warn us.

gators, snapping turtles, snakes, stuff to get tangled in, stuff to get cut on, nasty germs

not to mention getting tangled in the car IF you found it.
