I will be checking this out via a virtual machine over the weekend. Interested to see the use of Snaps.
I am never a first adopter. Let other people find the bugs. I prefer LTS versions out at least six months.
This is something I may have to give some serious consideration to. After the current MS OS build and its repetitive failures (had to rebuild the OS 7 times and don’t get me started on the “ClassPNP.sys” issue...), Ubuntu may be a viable alternative. My concern is that the apps I need might not run under the Ubuntu kernel. My wife does a considerable amount of photo editing and our financial software is tied to our credit union, losing either of those would be a deal breaker.
My machine has 16GB of RAM, so I have no problem running VMs. That's what I've done with Windoze: I have a VM on Virtualbox running on 3 cores with 4 GB of RAM...when I need to make a change, I clone the VHD and make the change on the new VM until I am certain that there won't be a problem. When I need to run the Windows apps, I use the VM; otherwise, I just run on Linux (which is about 75-80% of the time at a minimum).
Yup. I have a W10 VM running in VBox on Fedora-23 for things that only Windows can do. I use bridged network, so it just looks like another machine on my network.

The GIMP for photo editing ; financial software may be a problem tho
Was going to ask this... is it LTS yet? I’m fine with 14.04.
There is open source financial software that runs in Linux.
For windows apps in the Linux world, you have three options:
- convert to a Linux app. Many times this is the better option. A lot of MS Office apps have alternatives that are just as good or better than the existing app. For example: GIMP is a photo editor that many feel is very close to Photoshop. https://www.gimp.org/
- run in an emulator. WINE and PlayonLinux are emulators that allow windows applications to run inside Linux. Photoshop is on of the supported apps
- run windows inside Linux. Virtualbox allows for the creation and execution of a virtual windows environment inside Linux. This is often used to support those applications that only run occationally and there is simply not an alternative.
What the names of the two apps you have most concern about.
What [are] the names of the two apps you have most concern about.
Bamboo (software quite and digital tablet) and Quicken.
Me too. 14.04 is as stable as the Rock of Gibraltar.
I will wait six months before I upgrade. As I said earlier, let others find the bugs and give the developers time to finish their bug version of whack a mole.
I am a developer and can guarantee bugs have crept into the version upgrade. There is 0% chance that 16.04 is bug free. I would bet my life on it with utter confidence for a dollar. How severe they are, who knows. 14.04 for me for 6 months.
Am I the only one who couldn’t care less about the OS as long as it runs the applications I need? The OS should be invisible and functional.
The best OS is the one I never notice.
I have a non production machine. I'm going to see if I can get a specific VPN working on it. Posting this using Mint 17.3.
Clarification question on Bamboo. Is this Bamboo Loop as it Watcom software or is this Bamboo Software as in Atlassin or is it something else?
With regards to Quicken, in the Linux space, Quicken runs (different version = different results) in the emulation space on Wine. See https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=107 for the relevant details. Highly recommend sticking with Gold rated solutions. This generally means that you are a year or two behind in versions.
If you are willing to pay a couple extra bucks, a commercial emulator known as CodeWeavers seems to support Quicken well in Mac so it should do well on Linux. At least, that has been my experience with CodeWeavers. https://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/crossover/quicken-2016-mondo-patch
Heh.... from the comments below the article you linked to:

I have upgraded my Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04 yesterday. After that, when I opened my “system settings”, the settings would not go away even though I clicked on the “close” button. Please help me friends
