In fact there are very good reasons for keeping iTunes around on your Windows machine. If you don't have a Mac, managing any iDevices is a LOT easier with iTunes for Windows than any other Windows program I've found.
I've got both (Windows and Mac boxes) and have iTunes on all of them. Unlike QuickTime, iTunes seems quite stable.
