I was told an interesting thing recently. Someone I know works at a bank in a management position. She was told that the new policy of the bank is "equal pay for equal work" - sounds reasonable but the reality is that at that bank your years of service no longer matter. She had to immediately give raises to the newly hired so they made the same amount as those who had been there for many years. Since they were all considered to be doing the same work, even if they were unable to do the work on their own without those more experienced people in the department helping them or even training them, they were all considered to be doing the same work.

How would you like that?

That is insane and impractical-I don’t know one independent contractor-myself included-who pays a new, inexperienced helper the same as someone who has been working with/for us on jobs for awhile-not even if that newbie is someone’s kid, nephew or other kin. There is no way you will not lose money-inexperience means mistakes without close supervision-both cost time, and time is money...

If that was my position, I would adopt the minimum level of productivity or competence needed to be hired.

That guy out in Seattle who decreed “everyone who works for me will make at least $70k” had his more experienced people flee. Same idea.

Idiots. Experience counts. Same pay scale, not same pay. Get better at your job, get raises. It’s called incentive.

Well, it seems everybody needs to deal with pay inequity in their own special way.

Restaurant acknowledges pay gap by charging women 79 cents for every dollar of their tab.
