But what a matchup! McNally - Drysdale and Palmer - Koufax, Bunker - Osteen, then McNally - Drysdale again.
I hang the goat horns on Willie Davis. His three errors in game 2 helped give the Orioles a 2-0 series lead.
Yep, Willie Davis made 3 errors in one inning in that game.
As a trivia matter, that game 2 of the ‘66 World Series was Sandy Koufax’s last game. We didn’t know it at the time, but he had decided to retire after the 1966 season, but didn’t announce it till after the World Series was over.
I well remember that and Willie Davis as well!.
He was one of the fastest base runners ever. Wills got steals because he was quick out of the gate and got huge leads. Davis did it on pure speed.
I once saw Davis hit an inside the ball park HR on his first at bat of the game. Late in the game, the Dodgers had a big lead (rare for them) and he hit a stand up double. As he was headed to second, he had no intention of stopping and kept going. The outfielder hesitated on his throw and Willie kept going. The ball went to the catcher and Davis with those long legs flying was out by 30 feet. The crowd roared with delight and laughter.
I think Davis wanted to be one of the few to have ever hit to IBPHR's in BB history.
