WHITWELL, Tenn. (AP) A Tennessee woman is facing child neglect charges after deputies found her driving ahead of her young daughters while making them walk to school.
Marion County Sheriff Ronnie Bo Burnett said the mother told deputies her daughters were being punished for missing the bus, the Chattanooga Times Free Press reports

We use to walk to school even in the snow uphill both ways.
Telling your kids to walk to school is now child abuse?
This America of ours needs a real good kick in the patookies.
As sweet Saint Loretta says (wack! wack!) “Snap out if it!”
When I was a kid missing the school bus was not an option. My tyrannical father would act like a bear with a sore a**. In fact, my father, Rex, was so famous for the way he acted when we kids messed up they named a dinosaur after him.
Tyrannosorea** Rex.
Oh, puleeze! I had to walk to school in the snow, rain or shine down a busy city street by myself every day for 12 years.
That mother didn’t let the girls out of her sight. They had each other and a dog for protection. Give her the key to the city, not an arrest record. Vote that sheriff out of office.
Oh, for Pete’s sake. She was keeping them safe from auto accident or *sigh* kidnapping.
What, you can’t make your kids empty the trash now?
Uh read the story.
I looked up the crime rate in Whitwell and as expected it was lower than average. But then I saw that 1 out of every 63 people is a register sex offender? So I looked up other cites to compare. What is happening here?

The family here says she’d have gotten off if she was driving them to a crack house or to get a late term abortion.
Even in the snowy-ice storm-floods, up hill both ways at a 45% angle.
Seriously; my brother, sister, and I did walk to school about 2 miles each way.
The school had some rule like you had to live 3 miles away befor you could ride the bus.
Our mother (single parent) couldn’t drive us because she had to be to work by 6am (back in the early 50’s).
So we were responsible for getting up, bathed, dressed and out of the house by about 07:30.
Mom always left our lunch bags on the kitchen table.
We were never late for school (GOD help us if we were) and we never thought anything of it.
We lived in a semi rural area and we would collect about 8 to 12 other kids in our area as we walked in and back home.
Much better than the earlier posted story. This one has distances (missing from the earlier post, and relevant to the story), conditions (also relevant), type and color of car (possibly relevant) and mother’s lack of driver’s license (perhaps useful in her defense). Thanks for the post.
Next thing you know she will be reading the bible to them.
I did it with no legs and I was happy...
14 in WDC? Clearly either wrong, or counting differently and wrong.
No. One needs to find the original report before “blessing” what this woman was doing! She didn’t even have a valid driver’s license and her dad was arrested on drug charges.
I too read another version of the story which had the additional information you referred to, BUT...
I’m not quite sure of its relevance.
What does granddad’s drug problem have to do with the grandkids walking to school? Nothing, as far as I can tell.
And as for the mom not having a valid driver’s license: OK, BAD on her, but that’s not what they arrested her for. She was charged with child abuse/neglect, not driving without a license.
It seems that having the kids walk was considered a criminal matter. That’s what strikes us all as being so strange.

I don't know about your other cities, but having lived near SF for decades, it is much easier to be classified as a sex offender almost anywhere else in the world than in SF.
Even the most extraordinary acts of public lewdness as treated as an attraction.
The type of road is important too....how much of a shoulder.......they cited heavy traffic, under 10, cold and 3 and a half mile walk. I know I wouldn’t let me daughter walk on our road like that because of the way people drive, sight lines and lack of a shoulder.
