When a helicopter pilot spotted the first crater in summer 2014, everyone was baffled.
The 100-foot-wide hole appeared on the Yamal Peninsula seemingly out of nowhere, during a tense season of Russian military action in Ukraine and international sanctions.
And then more appeared. Lacking a better explanation, aliens and underground missiles were floated as possible theories, according The Washington Post.
But the truth is that the holes might come from a threat not even Mulder and Scully are equipped to handle: climate change.
Scientific American reports that Arctic zones are warming at a breakneck pace, and summer 2014 was warmer than average by an alarming 9 degrees Fahrenheit, according to another story in Nature. As a result, scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) think that permafrost, the permanently frozen ground that covers the tundra, is starting to thaw in these warmer temperatures.
So how does frozen methane blow a 100-foot-wide hole in the ground?

We all are going to DIE !!!!
There is no leap they cannot make! LOL.
Oh noeeee.....we’re ALL gonna die!
GIVE UP ALREADY !!!!!!!! ,,,,,, Climate alarmist are the same people who believe in Easter Bunny .
If you look at satellite maps of Northern Russia, there millions of tiny little ponds that are the remnants of these sinkholes. These sinkholes have been happening since the end of the last ice age.
How could they possibly know ? Most monitoring devices were pulled\ignored from Russia, never-mind Russia traverses 11 time zones.
The truth is that they just don't know. When you believe climate change is happening and it can cause just about anything to happen, you will see anything that happens as evidence of climate change.
Nothing has changed. We are all going to die eventually but it won't be from climate change.
Russia stands to make a lot of money from climate change. The benchmark date for all of the carbon reduction targets is just before the collapse of the Soviet Union, when their CO2 production was at the maximum. Any mandatory CO2 reductions would not hurt Russia at all, because they are already there. In fact, they have carbon credits to sell.
So when I see stories about strange unexplained warming in remote Siberia, I remember who stands to make a lot of money here. The Russians are gangsters, and are not above a little lying to make a lot of money.
OH NOOO! We are DOOOMED. Martha where is my tin foil hat?
Are you saying there is no Easter Bunny?
Next you’ll be telling me there is no Santa!
BOO HOO!
These holes appear from the ground , ice, whatever melting or giving way underneath the surface.
Wouldn’t atmospheric warming be from the surface down?
The “tech insider” who wrote the article has no clue that natural gas and methane are the same thing. She worries about the two flammable substances being in such close proximity!
All the more reason to drill for methane/natural gas so the energy it provides isn’t wasted blowing off into the atmosphere.
The first company to figure out how to safely and efficiently recover gas from clathrate deposits will make billions.
Just a flesh wound - no worries.
Wouldnt atmospheric warming be from the surface down?
Science and reason have no place here. Begone wiley wascal.
Yep, it's falling. It's really falling!
“GIVE UP ALREADY !!!!!!!! ,,,,,, Climate alarmist are the same people who believe in Easter Bunny .”
The ‘Ether Bunny’ more likely
I seem to remember that pensions in England were also tied up in green energy stocks as such. If no one buys into the bull, the house of cards falls in.
