Pica is an eating disorder typically defined as the persistent ingestion of nonnutritive substances for at least 1 month at an age for which this behavior is developmentally inappropriate. It may be benign or may have life-threatening consequences.
f pica is suspected, a medical evaluation is important to assess for possible anemia, intestinal blockages, or potential toxicity from ingested substances.
In addition, it can also lead to surgical emergencies due to an intestinal obstruction as well as more subtle symptoms such as nutritional deficiencies and parasitosis.
Pica has been linked to other mental and emotional disorders. Stressors such as emotional trauma, maternal deprivation, family issues, parental neglect, pregnancy
Go ahead, say it. Out loud.
You are correct that this behavior sounds like pica syndrome. It is most often associated with iron deficiency anemia which is why it can be seen during pregnancy. Pregnant women generally need iron supplements starting about the fifth month of pregnancy and these cravings are an attempt to supply the nutrient that is lacking. One of the most bizarre substances I have heard associated with pica is starch eating - starch as in Argo starch used for starching laundry!
