If Apple was so great, why after all of these years are they not able to take more than 20% market share?

Why would I want a product from a company of exclusivity? They have always been exclusive with apps and hardware... special plugs, can’t replace battery, can’t add storage.... a joke.

They survive by raising sheep.

By your standards, a Mercedes-Benz would be a lousy car.

This is why I’ve never owned an apple product. I have a billionaire relative that has the apple tv system in their homes, yachts and even their private net. They abandoned iTunes for limewire (they use torrents now) because the files were not portable.

Etc.

I never had to replace a battery on an Apple Device.

Although I know if you do then, it cost $100 and you will generally get either the exact same device or an upgraded version.

The reason they have less of a share of the market is because of price.

Where they do have lower prices like mobile phones. They have a large market.

What is most important is Market cap. Overall Apple has a larger Market Cap than Microsoft. Apple leads while everyone else copies and sell cheaper versions.

With the horrible S6 ive been using for a year, i am more than ready to join the cult of Jobs.

Terrible piece of crap. Typical of sotware guys, they spent so much effort improving ot that all the things i loved about the S4 no longer work or exist.

If Apple was so great, why after all of these years are they not able to take more than 20% market share?

One company against ALL 500 other companies in the world making 1200 different Android and/or Windows phones, and it takes 20% of the market with just three models? And it takes 46% of the cellular phone market in the USA? 33% in South Korea, Samsung's and LG's home market, 26% in China. Last year Apple took home 94% of the cellular phone market profits and Samsung took home only 11%. Are you kidding? That is the epitome of great.

The SHEEP you refer to are those who have been following the crowd, buying what everyone else was buying simply because everyone else was buying it.

Apple users know more than Windows users because they know both Windows and Mac, generally either having had to use Windows in their work, or having owned Windows computers before, and have made an informed choice to not do that any more.

Apple doesn't play in the bargain basement computer market. They don't compete on price and as a result are not chasing the other makers in a caucus race to the bottom and therefore are taking close to 50% of all profits in the PC market.

"If Apple was so great, why after all of these years are they not able to take more than 20% market share?"

Market share is a function of sales -- often repeated -- sales.

Just this week, I ported the files from the ca 2002 Mac Powerbook G4 that I, and then, my wife, have been using continually since I bought it used -- sight unseen -- from a fellow FReeper.

Until this year, I bought only one other computer: a 17", 2008 Macbook Pro for doing cartography. It, too, is never turned off, is used 8-12 hours per day -- and it may well outlast me.

IOW, since 2002, I bought only two computers -- both Mac laptops, and they have served my wife and me superbly well.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Since 2002, how many computers have you bought?
~~~~~~~~~~~

Now, do you understand that reliability and well-designed functionality (read, "customer satisfaction") are a huge factor in "market share" figures?

Premium quality products will never appeal to those with a "Trash it -- I want a new gimmick!" mentality.

Apple understands that -- and Apple and its customers laugh all the way to the bank -- and are happy to do so.

Why, since BetaMax was a far superior technology in every way, did VHS win out?

Market share does not always reflect quality or technological superiority.

Of course, the reality is - Apple and MS took a somewhat different business plan on the early side - coupled with some interesting decisions and some fortuitous events, MS got the jump on Apple by pursuing the hard-core business side, which ultimately led to many other big advances market-wise.

And in the tech industry, what people know/use is a hard obstacle to overcome - but Apple HAS gained market share.

And of course - what do the market share numbers look like for smartphones?

I saw some stats from Sparkfun the other day. They have data about the OS that is used to visit their website. I was surprised to see that the Apple growth was very small, as was the Windows growth. What was growing significantly was Android.
