Microsoft Calls BS On Rogue Windows 10 Upgrades, Says Users Remain ‘Fully In Control’

Despite significant user outcry that the Windows 10 upgrade mechanism has gone rogue, installing on customers' Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 machines when their backs turned or otherwise away from the computer, Microsoft is pleading innocent. We first brought you news of the automatic Windows 10 upgrades over the weekend, and in nearly every case, Windows 10 installed without user intervention — something that is clearly not supposed to happen based on previous commentary from Windows chief Terry Myerson.

Microsoft issued the following statement regarding the “unplanned” upgrades:

We shared in late October on the Windows Blog, we are committed to making it easy for our Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 customers to upgrade to Windows 10. As stated in that post, we have updated the upgrade experience to make it easier for customers to schedule a time for their upgrade to take place. Customers continue to be fully in control of their devices, and can choose to not install the Windows 10 upgrade or remove the upgrade from Windows Update (WU) by changing the WU settings.

though I havent been able to get my Microsoft Office 2013 programs to work. Jerks.

Could be worse.

Office is only a hundred dollars [a year!] (And Open office and LibreOffice are free!)

I have a multi $thousands CAD program that won't run on Win 10.

There must be a reason why Microsoft is working so strenuously to force people to “upgrade” to Win10.

Win 10 data harvests every keystroke and reports it back to MS.

This data is sold to advertisers and anyone else with money, an ax to grind, or surrendered to anyone who got a warrant under even the flimsiest of pretexts.

If you aren't the paying customer, YOU are the product.

Because they stopped providing updates unless you upgraded to 8.1

Given that our Navy runs its ships on NT, good to know, if you are an enemy.

Some government mandate, perhaps?

Perhaps...

Don’t know what you’re running now but 10 is an improvement over the 8s.

They just want to turn the key and go.

You say that like making a car that just runs without constant tinkering under the hood is a bad thing!

Granted, some people do live for tinkering...

THANKS so much. I appreciate the advice. I just got back so I’ll follow all your suggestions. the new desktop has Windows 10. I may just do the upgrade on my laptop from 8.1 (I’m still getting prompts) now that I know what to do. I only used my old desktop for Word, printer stuff, ebay selling and photos, archiving family stuff etc. the new one will do the same. I had internet explorer 8.0 and after 10 years the XP just had to go. Some web sites did not work well and with XP I could go no higher than explorer 8. Finally ebay stopped working for me so I knew it was time. I have McAfee on my laptop and have had no issues with it. I am going to need some kind of simple photo editing software for the new desktop. I like to crop and adjust color and do some retouching on old photos I have scanned. I have been using an old version of Corel which I know well. Can your recommend something cheap and maybe even free so I can edit my photos. Looks like word 2016 is on there already I just need to purchase a product key. You have been very helpful! I also have some Roxio software that I purchased awhile back for my old desktop. I am in the middle of digitizing old VCR tapes of family stuff. I hope I can install it on the new desktop to continue otherwise I will keep the old desktop around for awhile.

Yeah, I changed it right after he passed. He was a good friend. Miss him every time I am on FR. And that’s a lot. He would be happy about how well Cruz has done and the fact that the RINOs have been shut out, at least for now.

Indeed he would. Perhaps he actually is, somewhere.

For photo manipulation, check out Gimp. It’s akin to Photoshop, but it’s 100% free. If it’s too feature-rich, check out Irfanview. That’s a photo editing tool that’s relatively powerful but not as Photoshop-y as Gimp.

Depending on the Roxio software you have, you might be able to upgrade. Depending on what you’re trying to do, you might be able to use Windows to do the conversions. Windows Media Center has some conversion options.

You made the right choice going to something other than XP. Many people accuse me of scare-tactics, but XP is legitimately terrifying. Good on you.

Thanks for the tips. Hope to get some of this done today. I have been wanting to upgrade that desktop for over a year and have been waiting til the dust settled over Windows 10 and I could read up on it. I have been running Norton on that old desktop. I actually have about 6 FR threads bookmarked from when 10 rolled out, full of warnings and was just thinking I should really start reading them. Finding this new thread and you was the help I needed. Thanks for the tip on the media center vs. Roxio. I did not think of that.

I have had several customers come in that had been scammed by this, one to the tune of $600, another $700, ( he finally had the presence of mind to cancel all his accounts) These B@*turds take advantage of elderly and naive people by scaring them and intimidating them.

Regarding your first answer, my settings were already good in the Customer Experience and User account sections. I may have done that at startup when I opted out of what I could. A question - I take it Windows Defender was turned off by McAfee and they do not run together??
May have to check out photo software tomorrow. Got the software for my older printer downloaded and working.

You’re correct that anti-virus products do not run simultaneously. You have to choose one over the other. I’m of the belief that Microsoft products work best with Microsoft products, and Defender was recently boosted to enterprise-class in the Microsoft world, meaning it’s comparable if not better than most third-party offerings. Not to mention, it’s free! Oh, and Defender is updated as part of Windows updates, so you never have to worry if you missed a virus definition from the third party.

Just food for though. Your mileage may vary.
