A lot of Air Force bases have runways about 15,000 feet long.

An old pilot told me they were built for the B-36’s.

A mile long runway isn’t really that long.

Depends on what’s landing there.

Edwards Air Force base has one runway 15,000 feet long, another is 12,000 feet long, and a third is 8,000 feet long.

“What needs nearly a mile long runway?”

I flew on recon planes (C121’s) during the Vietnam conflict - they needed TWO mile long runways due to the added weight of electronics gear.

B-52’s need two mile long runways.

I’m guessing any bomber that is fully loaded with aramaments and max fuel probably needs a pretty long runway.

Most commercial runways are in the area of 9000 - 12000 feet long.
