A pattern is starting to emerge that holds both promise and peril for Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump:
Trump does better in open primary contests where members of either party can vote, while Texas Sen. Ted Cruz tends to do better in "closed" contests limited only to registered Republicans.
The pattern could lend credence to Cruzs claim that hes the consistent conservative in the race, and continue to pose challenges for Trump as more closed contests including the critical Florida primary loom on the election calendar.
But if Trump indeed is being boosted by crossover voters, it suggests hes a stronger general election candidate than Democrats give him credit for.
Trumps got crossover appeal, said Christopher C. Hull, former chief of staff for Cruz backer and Iowa Rep. Steve King.
To date, Trump has won a dozen contests, seven of which were open to voters regardless of party affiliation and two of which have a hybrid system. He has won only three contests that were limited to registered Republicans Nevada, Kentucky and Louisiana. (His victories in the latter two states were relatively tight.)
By contrast, five of Cruzs six victories came in closed or semi-closed contests. The only exception was Texas, his home state.

Where one earth did you dream this one up from. What a completely ridiculous statement to make, about the greatest President we have had since Washington. And a President who Cruz highly respects.
voted for Hillary, I can see why you would support Trump.
voted for Hillary, I can see why you would support Trump.>>>
yes against obama three times. once in the primary and twice in the general. Here in philly i vote for all the wacko’s in the dem party during the primaries. i’m not sure i will vote for trump. did you read some tea leaves about that.
Pres. Reagan was everything the Donald is not and never could be. Pres. Reagan had class, strength and knowledge something the Donald will never have.
well at least you are thinking of who you will vote for. Go Cruz.
I might vote for bernie. Here in PA the republican primary season is usually over by the time we vote so right now i’m registered dem. so i can vote against the dem leader and for the other wackos in the dem primary. do you remember operation chaos that Rush was doing years ago?
Probably because Trump is not a Republican or conservative.
yes I remember that operation, but I think it is being used in reverse this time.
Goes down in the W column, just like Ted’s 600 vote win in Alaska goes in his.
“You Cruz supporters hated and despised President Reagan so not shocked by your comments.”
First of all, that is a lie.
Reagan was my favorite president, though I was not old enough to vote him into office.
Cruz is my first choice in this race.
Second, you need to read what the owner of this site said, and stop the attacks on Cruz and the nonsensical claims of Cruz supporters being anti-Reagan or anti-conservative. Support your preferred candidate. May the best man win.
I say we drop the vitriol against each other and against our leading candidates as of now. Were only serving to harden the hearts of our natural allies against us and from this point forward, the hit pieces will not change minds or votes, but will possibly feed the enemy propaganda machine. I am a Cruz supporter, and I understand unprovoked attacks like this are infuriating, but it is time to unite the party.
Everyone should support their preferred candidate and drop the attacks on the opposing Republican candidate. May the best man win.

He also said stop attacking trump which you guys have been for weeks.
Fair enough but Cruz has none of those things either.
“He also said stop attacking trump which you guys have been for weeks.”
Yes he did. I suggest you join me in calling BOTH sides to a truce.
I am NOT limiting my comments to Trump supporters.
Please join me.
Ok. I will.
Wrong! Cruz has not won a single primary outside of his home state and it’s satellite state, Oklahoma. Outside of those 2 states, Cruz has won ONLY CAUCUS states, where turnouts are thin, easier to control, and voters are pressured to vote for Cruz.
Cruz lost all other southern states, where evangelicals abound, to a NY state values candidate. Hillary will beat Cruz worse than LBJ beat Goldwater.
Democrats would be *thrilled* to have the short-fingered vulgarian as our candidate. No wonder they’re playing their own Operation Chaos wherever we let them.
On the other hand, Cruz terrifies them.
