As someone else replied, it is similar to a Hawthorne short story, to me most like Young Goodman Brown. Underlying it all is the implied shallowness of Puritan faith in the face of the world’s offers, even if those aren’t luxuries. That’s pretty much Hawthorne. I’m not sure why anyone would find it scary or disturbing, but that’s just me.

The father's message to the community seemed to be that his family was more devout than the rest of the community, but leaving it ambiguous was an excellent choice. We weren't meant to know if the family was overly pious, or had some evil predilections, that led to their decision to leave. There were subtextual cues that the lad had incestuous feelings toward his older sister, so perhaps we were meant to draw an inference from that.
I watched The Awakening on Netflix, a British ghost mystery story with lots of twists. The acting was great.
I think she’s campaigning up north today. Not sure what state though. 8<)
Puritan settlements ranged from Maine, Mass, Conn, and NH, it was a locale thing. It stopped when the Mass limey Gov instituted appeal from the district courts and created the Superior Court System.
This takes place several decades before the Salem business.
I make it a point to avoid “disturbing” anything. Most of us have had enough trauma and tragedy in our lives that to self-inflict it on us by “entertainment” seems destructive.
