I can't recall a more seemingly authentic depiction of the psychological state of mind of early 17th century Puritans facing the American wilderness. Some Christian film review sites think the film endorses Satan worship. (The Church of Satan has given the film raves). In any case it's quite disturbing and refuses to leave the mind.

I’m sure her web site has her next campaign stop. (Sorry, couldn’t resist!)

I go to the movies about once every other blue moon, but if it’s historically accurate I might go see it.

It’s in my Netflix DVD queue so when it gets a release date, I’ll move it to the top.

Emotionally accurate. It has constant intimations of the supernatural...sort of a Hawthorne short story.

"Who, Hillary? She’s on my TV every #$%^ day!"

My DVR is my best friend. Everything I watch is recorded so I can fast forward through the crap.

So it's worth a watch? I've read mixed reviews.

Is it more of a horror, demonic possession type movie or a psychological thriller?

Both really. Not so much possession though as spiritual allegiance. Millennials are complaining how bored they were and how hard the dialogue is to understand. Which shows the care taken to imbue the thing with period flavor.

I liked the story quite a lot, and loved the authenticity of the dialogue. The fear was real, and psychological, and not the cheap, childish jump-scares that so many “horror” movies choose to employ. Even the still shots showing the ominous forest led to breathless suspense and played havoc with the viewer’s sense of dread.

Here be spoilers:

I wish they would have saved the “reveal” of the witches’ real existence until the very end, or at least until Black Philip spoke. Had they done his, the audience would not only have been faced with the horror of a family ripping itself apart, but would have also have been wrestling with the psychological knowledge that perhaps the family was completely wrong, and were letting their fears overrule their reason. One would have felt an overwhelming sense of the tragedy unfolding, only to be gut shot to learn it was real after all.

Cool. Thanks.

I can't even name a decent horror / psycho thriller movie that' been released in the last twenty years.

I would say Event Horizon but that was more of the horror, scifi genre.

A point of fascination is that it’s never made clear just why the family was expelled from their community. What were the theological differences they had?
