And in international news:
- Note the name of the steamer arriving in New York.
We may see that name again.
- The Paris Peace Conference referenced here is for the Crimean War.
Russians will not be happy with the results, and needless to say, Mr. Putin disregards them altogether.
- Not clear what "excitement in England" or "tidings of the Pacific" were all about.
- Finally, we might note that whole regiments of British troops moving to Canada would be a matter of great concern to a United States whose army then was circa 15,000 total, most scattered in small posts out west.

There was a lot of unrest at the time in Canada and relations with the U.S. were far from cordial. There had been rebellions in the 1840's that resulted in the union of Upper and Lower Canada. But the rest of Canada was still a hodgepodge and pressures were building that would eventually result in the founding of the self-governing Dominion.
The Irish Famine had resulted in large scale immigration to the U.S. and considerable to Canada. Indeed, after the Civil War American Fenians would attempt an "invasion" of Canada to overthrow British rule.
