A Cedar Rapids businessman convicted of mislabeling Halal meat will spend 2 years in prison.
74-year-old Bill Aossey, founder of Midamar, was sentenced in federal court Thursday morning on federal fraud charges. The sentence also calls for three years of supervision after release and a $60,000 fine.
During the hearing the judge repeatedly scolded Aossey for committing perjury during his trial in court last year.
Aosseys conviction originally called for a 9 to11 year sentence. The judge cut the sentence due to Aosseys age of 74 and the unlikeliness that he would commit another offense.
Aossey was convicted by a jury on 15 of 19 federal charges last July involving the sale of misbranded halal beef products and falsifying export documents and certificates. Halal meat is specially slaughtered to meat Islamic religious standards.
The Aossey family has a rich legacy in Cedar Rapids. Aossey, Sr. father helped establish the Mother Mosque in the early 1900s, which is one of the oldest standing Mosques in North America.
If it had been done by a Christian or Jew, it would be called a hate crime.
Glad he was found guilty. Fraud is fraud.
Since tomorrow is March 1st, with spring, baseball, and hot dogs coming along, and speaking of this ‘hay=lal’ harrumph,
just a word to those who use “Vienna Beef hot dogs” ...
they have been labeled ‘hay-lal’.
OTOH, Ball Park and Oscar Mayer are still free of this ‘hay-lal’ harrumph.
