We have discussed Rule 40 which says, I think, that a candidate must win a majority of delegates in 8 states to have his name put in nomination. You can't just win the state, right?
Do I have this right? So Iowa would NOT count for Cruz, but Nev. would count for Trump?
I forget, what were the splits in NH and SC?
I would assume NH counts for trump as well
He also won a majority in NH
Guam, Marianas Islands, Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico have all been targeted by Cruz in his strategy to get to 8, so he should get those. Maybe Texas, although getting 50% will be tough. He might get a couple of western states that have caucuses, too (Idaho, North Dakota, Wyoming, Alaska).
But Trump has this in the bag unless something very weird happens. The GOP had been hoisted on their own petard - no other candidate can be nominated for the first ballot, which means no other candidate can be voted for. No other candidates eligible means those delegates who are sworn to other candidates just don’t vote — they have no one to vote for.
The GOP meant to make it a coronation for Bush, and they made it a coronation for Trump.
No, Trump got 10 of 23 there. But the later states are winner take all, either by total vote or a combination of congressional district and total vote. It shouldn’t be any problem at all for Trump. In fact he is likely to be the only candidate entered for the first vote at the convention.
He won 11 of 23 delegates, it was under 50%, it doesn’t count.
actually he got 11.....so he is missing that half a vote.
Tuesday should make it close to eight anyway
I have been corrected....thanks for the information
Don’t you know that rules are for the little people? Look for them to change or be ignored if the GOPe isn’t getting the desired outcome.
As Jeff Sessions asked at the rally today, whose election is this after all? As he said the big power bosses in Washington claim it for themselves, but they are the servants and they work for us. We are their boss and it is high time they are brought to heel.
Politics is more like Rule 34...
Many thanks for the info!
So it looks like the string pullers got their strings cut...
Cruz did not get a majority there. Majority means 50+%. He got a plurality which means he got more than anyone else but it did not total 50%.
Even if they don’t get their names formally nominated, delegates can still vote for Cruz, Rubio, et al.
So far as I can figure, the only thing they lose out on is that they get no nominating speech and no seconding speech.
So can they um pass a rule that um someone with last name ‘Trump’ can in no way be on the ballot~
Let’s imagine the following scenario. Trump gets 1,080 delegates and wins a majority of delegates in 21 contests. No other candidate wins the majority of delegates in more than 5 contests.
Only Trump is eligible to be nominated.
The roll call is taken. Only Trump can be voted for. Trump gets 1,080 votes of 1,080 votes cast.
He wins the nomination. Why? Because he doesn’t need the majority of delegates available, he just needs the majority of votes cast.
No, delegates that are sworn to vote for a member not nominated cannot vote for a non-nominee. They can be released by the candidate they are sworn to, but they can’t vote for someone not on the ballot. They will just not vote if they are not released.
No write-ins at the convention.
While I’m a Cruz guy, the powers that be better not f this up. The more people Trump has backing him including his former competitors, the less likely GOP Lite will mess with the results.
