KISD Suspends Student For Leaving Class To Carry Asthmatic Student To Nurse's Office

Suspended KISD Student Receives Praises, Congressional Internship

KILLEEN -- A Killeen mother is defending her son who was suspended after helping a fellow student having an asthma attack.

Anthony Ruelas, 15, said his eighth grade classmate was wheezing and gagging for three minutes Tuesday morning while no one did anything. But when Ruelas did do something, he apparently broke the rules.

“He may not follow instructions all the time, but he does have a great heart,” said Mandy Cortes, Ruelas’ mother.

Ruelas goes to Gateway Middle School, an alternative school in the Killeen Independent School District. Ruelas has been suspended before, but Tuesday was different.

"I wasn't trying to hear it,” said Cortez. When she picked her son up from school for the suspension she told him,”No, they already told me what happened you walked out of class, and he was like 'ok forget it', but I can tell, ya know you know your kids, I could tell he was upset."

The reason Ruelas walked out of class? He was carrying a friend to the nurse’s office.

"I was like what? I'm suspended for this? Like, I was trying to help her,” said Ruelas...............................

I am a big fan of zero tolerance. Maybe in the future we can replace school administrators with androids and save a few bucks.

Remember back before video cameras, when people assumed stories like this were made up by the students or their parents?

the teacher was waiting on an email from the nurse and told the class to remain calm and stay in their seats. Fearing for the girl’s health, Ruelas didn’t listen and after several minutes of inaction, went against the teacher’s wishes to help his friend.

Good for this kid - he's not a sheep, as so many products of our school system are these days. His teacher is, however - a kid collapses to the floor, and she needs an email to help.

It is amazing how instinct, heart, and common sense can still prevail.

“15 and in the 8th grade?”

Why not?

He could have started school later than normal.

My daughter kept 2 of hers home for an extra year because they would have just made it into school by the cutoff date and therefore been the very youngest in the class.

She felt it would be best for them, and it was. They did quite well and are now in college.

These people hide behind their unions and administrators. The parents should sue the teacher in court for the cost of 5 years of private school citing the "hostile learning environment" she has created for their son. Let her lawyers figure out how to get the case reassigned to be against the school.

Start with her. Let her feel the pain of being served. Bitch.

I think a lawyer could make a good living on school cases I’m trying to remember the cases recently where two cal boys had aspirin and one advil and their trucks were searched and knives found. I think the administrators folded from parental pressure

This school actually has a rule: “Thou shalt not help a classmate who is having a medical problem”?
Just sit there and do nothing?

“Zero Tolerance” policies let ‘everyone’ off the hook because they don’t even have to think about what to do next when something happens. That’s all it is, really, and I don’t believe the bullsh*t that it’s for the good of the community and public safety. “Zero Tolerance” policies exacerbate the incompetence of the people who put them into place.

Our schools have become ridiculous in the past couple of decades. Would not send a child to a government school these days for any reason.
Education has long dropped of the list as a primary focus. Its all control and social engineering

What irony.

He’s receiving a scholarship from a Liberal Congressman, the very same people who caused this mess.
