I remember reading about him when I read When Hell was in Session by Jeremiah Denton. He may have also been mentioned in The Hanoi Commitment by James Mulligan, but I can't recall at the moment.

I heard he could've gone home any time after he was captured. All he had to do was denounce the US and call it a racist country....he refused.
He was also coupled with a white southerner, because the commies all believed the stereotype of white southerners loathing black men. Turns out, they became best friends and helped save each others' lives. Red, White, and Blue trumps black and white.
