Ideology: Donald Trump now calls himself a “common sense conservative.†What does that mean? Based on positions he’s taken out so far, it appears that “common sense conservative†means siding with liberals like Bernie Sanders on a number of issues.

'Consistent' isn't a qualifier, it provides emphasis.

The people of this country want a leader who will and can make and keep promises. It is so simple. Enforce the immigration laws on the books. We either have a country or we do not have a country!
The Congress has demonstrated that it is self-serving, greedy, and corrupt. The Republicans stand for next to nothing in connection with borders, language, and culture, protecting legal immigrants, protecting the middle class, our veterans, and our military.
We believe that Donald Trump has the gravitas to accomplish all of that to make American Great Again!

Technically, "consistent" isn't a qualifier. A qualifier "explains away" heterodoxy, making the attendant noun less powerful. A "consistent conservative" is always conservative, but a "compassionate conservative" is only conservative when s/he thinks it doesn't interfere with compassion. To put it another way, no one on the other side ever refers to him/herself being a "compassionate liberal," meaning only liberal when s/he thinks it doesn't interfere with compassion.
I don't mean to sound like a professor :-) but my work begins in three minutes...

Well Trump is a crony capitalist, who sought government favors for his business, he supported TARP, the Auto Bailout Ethanol Subsidies, The Obama stimulus.
So yes he is a member of the uniparty class who is plundering us and has benefitted personally from government plunder.
The lowering of tariffs in the teens is the actual cause. That helped create the boom and excesses of the 20's and the inevitable bust. When tariffs were restored to historical values that did exacerbate the G.D. but it was not the cause.

I would submit that consistent isn’t a qualifier. It’s more of an anti-qualifier, in that it inherently excludes all of those other silly qualifiers.
But you already knew that.
