Yup. I saw him in the late '70s when he performed on the old basketball court at the University of Florida.

Saw him on many years ago, Loudon Wainwright III (Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road) was the opening act. King Tut encore.
Let’s get small !
Saw Martin in the 70s at Claremont Colleges. I was in the front row of the mezzanine when he announced his famous “dime” trick. Of course no one beyond the first two rows could see it amongst the large audience.
To each his own. No hating today. Now, if you say you don’t like Ernie Kovacs I’m gonna hafta kick yer ass!
(just kidding)

GENIUS! Hell, I remember the guy with dark hair. Twisting balloons into shapes.
Did he get a Triple Double?
Did they also play the short film "The Absent-Minded Waiter" with Martin, Teri Garr, and Buck Henry?

Some folks don’t like pratfalls and 3-stooges films for a similar reason. Just not their cup-o-tea, and that’s ok.
The key to his standup humor is to understand he’s basically making fun of the comedy process and himself.
The funny part is knowing that he knows that the audience knows that he’s basically making fun. Then it’s just trying to figure out how far he’ll go with it. Sometimes being silly can rise to an art.
I saw him in HS in late 70’s as well. A bit before King Tut.
LWIII was also on the bill and got booed.
It wasn’t a Martin show, but a benefit so there was also Robin Williams (right before Mork and Mindy) and Martin Mull.
-PJ
Which of them was the funniest?
He wrote some great movies.
Martin.
But anything he did at the time was gold, as they say.
He came out and just shuffled around and pointed for a while to thunderous screams and laughter.
Williams was funny as well, maniacal and hyper.
And Mull did Men, which is a different type of humor.
I am surprised how well I remember it.
We didn’t know who he was.
I only found out later that he was the singer guy on MASH.
Last time Martin was funny, he was a poor random bastard.
One of the OTA stations has been playing “L.A. Story” all this week. Never watched much SNL(or seen most of his movies)but remember him doing a skit on SNL where he played someone who can see into the future(by rubbing his hands together or something). Wish I could find it on YouTube. Was a pretty funny bit.
And oh yes, he got a bit huffy when he got booed.
He said this will be my last song, and everyone cheered.
Then he said well i’ll do three more. And he did.
Steve was a riot back in the day...thank you for the thoughtful recap.
...
I read his memoir and he almost quit before he hit it big. He was doing what was going to be his last show, but he got a good review from a writer in Miami that turned his standup career around.
He also just seems like a nice guy.
