In order for spiders to inhabit the place there would have to be a food source to attract them. What would attract bugs for the spiders to eat?

Well, there were probably little spaces - especially around windows, around doors, and pipes/radiators - where spiders and other bugs would have gotten in. But I think Bigg Red and Blue Jays are correct: somebody probably was going in there, at least now and then, and doing perfunctory stuff.

Did you see those old books, all jumbled, disheveled on that cart/shelf?

I’d be on the floor, checking out the titles, reading bits; and then my OCD would kick-in, and I’d organize them neatly according to LC or Dewey :-)
