1. Only 62.7% of adult Americans are working. The so-called Labor Force Participation rate hasn't been this low since the late 1970s.
...
2. Long-term unemployment is still high. ... About 2.1 million Americans have been unable to get a job for over half a year. The government calls these people the "long-term unemployed."
...
3. Wage growth is anemic. ... The typical take home pay (often called "median income" by the Census Bureau) is about the same today as it was 20 years ago, once you adjust for inflation.
In other words, middle class families aren't really getting ahead. They're just getting by.

I always encourage people to compare those cheap prices in the past by using silver or gold for comparison.
When gas was 25 cents per gallon, it was paid for with a silver quarter. How much gas will that silver quarter get today?
That probably shocks a lot of young people....
When I retired a few years ago I made several trips to my local small town Social Security Administration office. The first thing you notice is the armed security guard. Then you scan the room and realize you are the only person waiting who has a meaningful work history.
I listened to the conversations at the service windows and realized that the SSA agents were actually pushing disability eligibility. It was very disheartening. Even worse, as a lifetime taxpayer I was treated like the enemy. Agents who were willing to spend ample time with disability cases were very short with me. In fairness, I was probably overdressed (khakis and a dress shirt).
I can top your story, Ha ha!......I needed a replacement SS card and had to go to the Marietta, GA office. An entitlement miasma if I ever saw one. Much like you describe. I waited HOURS! After negotiating through the armed guard, their bullshit process and being incarcerated with the local lowlife.
I hear my name called, this woman calls me through the double doors and escorts me to this obviously blind f@cker, and she proceeds to “translate” my need to him repeating every word so this joker can try to type it into the computer. The effing SS replacement card NEVER came. I had to go back. This time I got this nice black lady that acted like I was James Earl Ray trying to pull a fast one over on them. “I didn’t get the damned card, lady!”
ALL the documentation ALL over again, repeat the process, SWEAR I wasn’t illegal and say a bunch of sh!t in English before she would believe me.
All because SS could check off on some “We hire disabled people” checklist. I wasted two whole days on that.
The apply online is the kicker. The algorithms they use can easily disqualify any resume and there is no way to verify why you were not presented to the hiring manager.
I have determined that if you list experience or education before 1996 means you are over 40 and it disappears into the black hole. I have tested this by editing my resume and had a few in-person interviews. You can see the shock on their faces when they realize your age. Most companies won’t consider someone who is 53.
I have an MS in Applied Physics and I probably won’t be able to get another job anytime in the near future. I can’t even get a minimum wage job because of the MS Degree and past experience as engineer, manager.
They are getting paid not to work. Sure there are things like SS and disability, etc. that could be considered, but the overall impact is that there are millions upon millions upon millions who are settling for less. For what they get, all they have to do is go vote for it.
Itâs not just in the urban environment, itâs out here in the âsticksâ aka rural environment. With an over 60% rate of people in my county getting âassistanceâ of one sort or another itâs nearly heartbreaking. The school district even has free lunch for ALL students now, even those whose parents/guardians can afford the lunches.
So many people are gaming the system. They collect every taxpayer benefit available, which keeps them from starving, and then work an off the books “all cash” job every now and then (cutting hair, babysitting, moving furniture, landscaping, home repair) that allows them to keep up with the Joneses when it comes to clothing, cellphones, etc. They have realized that they are better off under this arrangement than taking a $10.00/hour job and losing the freebies.
In some areas, they allow the students entire family to come to school to eat lunch - and even dinner - 365 days a year
