Grease will be the word in the halls of Fox this week. The network's three-hour live telecast of the musical was a ratings success.
Nielsen has the performance averaging 12.2 million viewers and a handsome 4.3 rating among adults 18-49. That's after early numbers gave the performance a 7.4 overnight rating among households. Fox easily had first-place status on broadcast for the night and saw its score in the key demo rival TV's biggest live musical in recent memory.
This being the network's first live musical, its only ratings comparisons will be to NBC's last three efforts. Topping the first of them, 2013's The Sound of Music Live, was an all-but-impossible task. The show attracted 18.3 million live viewers and a 4.6 rating with adults 18-49 after an initial 10.9 overnight rating among households. 2014 follow-up Peter Pan sunk, but December's The Wiz rebounded a bit with 11 million viewers.

Grease Live was brilliantly done!
I know the Met simulcasts live performances at theatres.
Yes, it was.
Far better than the movie as the audience contributed greatly to the energy of the performance.
It was exciting to watch.
I've seen one. Intermission and all. Super HD in video and sound.
And includes the required subtitles.
Was it based on the original play, or the movie?
The finale was outstanding. Might have been a bit of a different ending if the 2nd shuttle bus had bobbled more than it did.
You know, not everyone can be a perfect dancer, perfect actress, and perfect dancer simultaneously at the same time.
4.5/5.
Based more on the play, but with elements from the 1978 movie as well.
At least one original song.
The original musical.
They should have played it tonight.
Man.I missed it-—didn’t even know it was on.
Live entertainment on TV——what a novel idea. :-)
.
I’m sure NBC will replay it. It was extravagant and so much fun!
My family enjoyed it as well. The production was nearly perfect considering all the moving parts. Supposedly the largest wireless mic footprint ever attempted on tv.
“Iâm sure NBC will replay it. It was extravagant and so much fun!”
I don’t think Fox would appreciate NBC rebroadcasting it.
To be help anyone seeking it out for replay, it was a Fox production :)
And to think that dark haired 'pink lady's father died right before the start of the show. Hats off to her.
I missed this, because I had to work, but I will tell you, I’ve played just about every musical there is, and live performance is a lot of fun, even if one is in the ‘pit’.
You noticed the shuttle bus going over the curb too. LOL. That could’ve been disastrous.
I meant to watch it, but got busy with the grandbaby last night.
Will it be rerun soon?
Yawn......
