We eat stuff we’ve stored or prepared in advance, things that can be eaten cold or heated to at least warm over sterno. We live in a suburban apartment, and while we have a wood-burning fireplace and its lovely ambience, it’s not much good for cooking (so far as we’ve practiced), or for heating, for that matter ;-)

We’re also working on developing our outdoor cooking skills. A lady named Marcella, another Freeper, is the ‘Goddess of Alternative Cooking Methods’. You might find her posts on the prepper threads. We’ve gotten a great many good ideas from her research and experimentation.

We lost electric power in a big snow and ice storm five or six years ago here in Missouri. The storm knocked down tree limbs and with them, the electric lines nearby.
Our Lopi wood stove was a godsend. Frozen chili, frozen stuffed peppers and some Thai soup kept us going for the five days, all made ready to eat on the top of the stove.
Plenty of firewood, split and stacked, came in handy.

You need one of these Max Burton butane burners:

Just like a single burner induction top, you would find it useful, especially for entertaining - not just as an emergency cooktop. I think it would be ideal on a gueridon. Steak Dianne, Crepes Suzette, or even Fillet of Beef a la Deutsch. Boiling water for tea or the French press. Fondue if you picked up a baguette before the storm. I don't think it would stand up to your heavy copper Mauviel cookware but the lighter weight line would be O.K.
