Ooops, left off the rest of the article:

‘’They were backed up to the restaurant door with that dead deer in that car they use for delivery,” the witness said.

Police turned the case over to the Cabarrus County Health Department.

“We went there and found, indeed, they had slaughtered a deer, or were cutting up a dead deer in the back of the parking lot and had already brought parts inside, into the sink,” County Health Director William Pilkington said.

Channel 9 caught up with the restaurant owner Sunny Chen on Wednesday who said he was the one driving the Versa in the photos that a viewer sent in.

“I asked somebody if I could eat deer from the side of the road. He said OK,” Chen said. “But maybe it’s not okay to bring it to the restaurant, so that’s my mistake.”

I think, but I'm not totally sure, that dressing road kill or a wild animal in an establishment, or even introducing that dressed meat into an establishment previously inspected for consumption of USDA-cleared meat is a serious Health Department violation in quite a few states.

An establishment can be cleared to serve "wild game animals" under certain circumstances, but I don't think road kill falls under that category.

Nothing wrong with fresh roadkill venison. But you have to be careful. I read a story a few years ago about some fellows in Pennsylvania who saw a good sized buck get hit by a car and they loaded the deer into their van.

Unfortunately it wasn't as dead as they thought and it regained consciousness in the back of the van as they were driving along. It was in a pretty bad mood. Several of the guys got broken ribs, bruises, etc. before they could stop and get it out of the van.
