As fun as it is, I always hated the song. The lyrics.
Basically it is the song of men (Roy Orbison was not a great looking guy) thinking pretty women owe them everything. It creeps me out.
Thank you! Hadn’t seen that. Roy was a relative. Supposedly was at a family reunion when I was 7-8 years old in the late ‘50’s. Sadly I got my diapers knotted for some reason and tried to run away.
Made it a mile or so before I realized no one was coming for me.
When I got back he was gone.
Dang.

I read that the song was put together by Roy and a friend in his kitchen. The words just popped into his head when someone said: "Now, that is a pretty woman."
You may be reading more into it than is there.

Some women think being pretty is some kind of trap. But then again, some women think that being a woman is some kind of trap. Definitely don’t want to get stuck with one of those.
Lighten up. It is music, not a political tome. Pretty womens lives matter.

Additionally, many entertainers of that era were not good looking, some of them downright ugly. Back then talent is what counted. Think Buck Owens, very popular in his time, less than good looking. Similar could be said for Sonny James. Janis Joplin, I personally never cared for her style, but she had many fans and was not that great to look at.
Was this song about his wife? He had such a tragic life with her death and one of their kidsdying in a fire. He really loved her.
