Microsoft is working with Intel, AMD, nVidia, and Qualcomm to support Windows 10 at a chipset level, effectively killing the future of Windows 7 and 8.
The changes, which were announced in a company blog post, are the next step in Microsoft's big push to get everyone, from personal users to businesses, onto the latest version of the operating system.
The partnership with the chip makers is surprising, as cutting support for Windows 7 and 8.1 on future PCs could adversely affect sales.
"Going forward, as new silicon generations are introduced, they will require the latest Windows platform at that time for support," the blog post reads.
According to Microsoft, Windows 10 will be the only supported operating system for the next generation of processors from Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm. Anyone who wants to use Windows 7 or 8 will not be able to when the new chipsets start rolling out.
The announcement, fronted by Terry Myerson, the head of Windows and Devices at Microsoft, is unusual for the company and highlights just how much it wants Windows 10 to be a success. The company recently confirmed that Windows 10 had hit 200 million users, around one fifth of the one billion goal.
Myerson stressed that Microsoft was aiming to be transparent with its enterprise customers who, when the new chipsets become available, will be shepherded onto Windows 10. Traditionally, the upgrade path from one version of Windows to another is a much longer period of time.

How is this legal?
You don’t own the Microsoft product. They do. You’re merely paying for the use of it. Same with all the other software companies.
[ How is this legal? ]
If Microsoft gives enough money someone with a pen and a phone will make it legal...
Why wouldn’t it be legal?
I detest MicroThugSoft.
They’re behaving like Commiecast.
My sister still uses Windows 7 for their business, has no plans on upgrading. If Microsoft ruins the operating system she is screwed
I would be converting to Linux if SAGE accounting software was available for it.
Windows 7 and 8 don’t have the Microsoft Store. Windows 10 does. That’s why they are pushing it. The Apple Store and Google Store make a lot of money for those companies through app, music and video sales. Microsoft wants in on that game. Their Windows Phone is a flop. So all they have to run their store on is Windows 10. That’s why they are giving it away and pushing it so hard. That’s why they are killing off old versions of Windows that don’t have the Microsoft Store. Follow the money.
MacOS is a great alternative if you need commercial software.
Linux is coming on strong, and will hopefully get commercial (CAD etc.) support in the future.
Windows needs to die in a fire. ;-)
Back to Apple.
I was telling my ‘mailing list’ buddies just yesterday that soon Microsoft will be FORCING everyone to use their latest spyware, rather than merely trying to sneak it in through stealthy updates...
Linux is looking better every day.
Maybe it’d be easier to go back to all paper.
I one point I could generate an image of the paperwork in Excel.
To do repetitive forms, I'd just pull up an old one, type in the few changes (sometimes even grabbing a serialized form and putting in the # from the "real" form on the clone. Print it out and dump it in some in box somewhere. No waiting on the mainframe web forms to data check and slowly cough up the next field.
Life was glorious before becoming a data entry clerk in later systems.
Collusion.
Something tells me the next computer I get will be using Linux.
Microsoft is making Apple look like an open-source outfit.
I happily committed to Linux in Nov. 2015 for the main home machine. Win 3.11, XP, Vista, 7 and 10 have their own VirtualBoxes for the rare occasion when a trip through M$ is needed. I even have a clone of Win7 so if the operating version goes down, I can delete the whole thing (virtual machine) and be running a new clone of the spare (with all s/w and updates loaded) in a couple of minutes.
It's a beauty....
Windows Store wouldn’t be the only reason, especially if we’re talking about changing the code base to work only on certain processors.
The big thing right now (which everybody knows unless they’ve been living under a rock for the last 5 years) is mobile platforms. Tablets and cell phones.
That’s one of the reasons why Windows changed their interface so radically with Windows 8. They were making it more mobile-friendly, while allowing developers to write programs (apps) simultaneously for desktops and mobile, without a whole bunch of work.
So yeah, it was/is money, but it’s more complex than just the Store. It’s the developers, the processor manufacturers, everybody in the supply chain. It’s even the end-user, who constantly demands faster and more efficient computing.
The only thing is, Linux (and maybe Apple, I don’t know... I only have experience with MS and Linux) had these growing pains 3 years before MS did. It’s got them hammered out already. The only problem it has, which is its main problem, is a shortage of developers; particularly big-name developers.
Microsoft Internet Explorer vs Netscape.
That was just about browsers with many countries suing Microsoft.
Now massive lawsuits coming their way over this decision to block competitors for an operating system.
That’s cool. I hate the tiles system being forced on us in 8. And I hate their spy infested 10 a bet more. I never though this day would come for me, but I think I might finally need to dig deep and buy an Apple next time.
Somewhere Swordmaker is smiling.
