Dog hoarding case has positive outcome

BISBEE — A case of dog hoarding had a positive outcome Thursday when the owner agreed to voluntarily relinquish 37 of her 63 dogs, who all appeared to be healthy and well-socialized according to representatives from the Humane Society of Southern Arizona, which took the dogs to be checked out, neutered and spayed and then adopted.

Kelly Galligan, president of Friends of Bisbee Animal Shelter, helped coordinate the effort after talking with the woman at her home in Bisbee Junction last month, where she was keeping 62 shih tzus and a one-eyed poodle.

“Kelly reached out to me and said we have a client who is overwhelmed,” said Kim Ward, Animal Services Supervisor with the Humane Society of Southern Arizona. “Our organization is a shelter and adoption center in Tucson.”

Blind dogs are so incredible. I would not hesitate to have another one. Our Mia Mu was blind from birth. She was my hero.

Zeus went through the Heavenly Dogie Door a year ago. We now have a 7 1/2 month old Miniature American Eski Pup we call Charlie (like Uncle Charlie from "My 3 Sons").

I’m so sorry about Zeus. We lost Mia November 16th. All except for 3 of my dogs (1 at the Bridge & 2 living) have been Eskies. I still have 2 & an Eskie/ Cattle Dog mix.

Congratulations on your baby. You’re probably at the tear-your-hair-out phase, but I wish they could be frozen as puppies. They’re worth every crazy minute X 100.

Yes blind dogs are incredible ! Our little guy lost his first eye at age 2 from glaucoma, 2nd eye when he was 4. We had the blind eyeballs removed a while later because he had painful infections in his eyes. He quickly recovered from the removal and learned his way around the house and yard. He is truly amazing. I almost had him put down because of the horrible pain but I am so glad I didn’t! He is a great watch dog ........... that sounds funny so I guess he is a hearing dog!

I had no idea they could get glaucoma so young. It’s hard not to panic when they’re in pain or you think they’re in pain.

Oh yeah. And they are fearless.

:-D Love Pup is what we call our ‘’baby’’ who’ll be 10 July 1. Or Little Girl. (She’s a mini, but not very little anymore.)

The boys are generally a lot more affectionate than the girls & ‘’velcro’’. My Eskie boy is always on- high energy even though he’s getting older. The girls are more independent & laid back.

The glaucoma diagnosis surprised us too. We saw the white eye and knew he was blind. He had gotten in a fight with another of our dogs we thought his eye might have been injured in the fight. When we noticed his other eye start to turn white our vet sent us to a canine entomologist (didn't know there was such a thing). She tested him and said it was glaucoma.. Very soon his sight was gone in the 2nd eye then the infections started.

He is a great little guy and when people come over to the house they rarely notice that his eyes are gone. They always ask if the other dogs take care of him and lead him around. The answer is no, he doesn't need any help finding anything.

Autocorrect is the devil. I’ve started using preview because half the time, I go back over a post & my eyes bug out of my head. WTH?

I think the younger they are (or born blind), the faster they adapt, but really, I don’t know. I do know that it’s amazing how they develop/ have a 6th sense for getting around obstacles. If I wasn’t where Mia thought I should be when she thought I should be there, she would come get me herself. We would put her in a chair whenever we ate because she’d get into trouble if we didn’t.

We have a really good vet opthalmologist here, Dr Bonney.
