Former NFL star Lawrence Phillips has been found dead in his prison cell. The 40-year-old, who was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the first round of the 1996 NFL draft, was serving time at Kern Valley State Prison in California at the time of his death for two separate incidents - assaulting a girlfriend and hitting three teenagers with his car. It is believed his death was a suicide. Phillips was also facing additional charges at the time of his death after being accused of murdering his cellmate last year, Damion Soward.

Guy couldn't not get away from his demons. Osborne lost his integrity when he allowed this thug to play for the sake of a national championship.

“Osborne lost his integrity when he allowed this thug to play for the sake of a national championship.”

I agree. Who knows if punishing him early would have helped turn Phillips around. Probably not, but Osborne could have sent a strong message, but didn’t.

Do you think that steroids are the problem with that Bengals player that had some issues this weekend?

I’m surprised that that car-wash dropout made it to 40. A more worthless human being has probably never existed. Compost his stinking carcass and maybe he can finally justify being born.

I think these guys have had their behavior excused for so long that they just don’t know how (or why they should) control themselves. Call it NFLuenza. What we saw last weekend is the beginning of it transferring to on the field behavior, with the coaches completely losing control and seemingly unable to bench their star players.

It certainly does put a blemish on what I believe was the most dominant college football team in the last 40 years, that 1995 Nebraska team. I always joked that the Gators were still trying to tackle Tommie Frazier.

Phillips was sentenced to a total of 31 years in prison in 2009

I guess he couldn't get an OJ jury.......

If I remember right another thug Christian (?) Peters was on that team too. He enjoyed beating up and assualting co-eds like his teammate.

Yep, no father to teach right from wrong from the start, then bigger than mom at 12, the jr high/middle school coaches are no longer allowed to discipline them - they have NO idea what is decent behavior, they have never ever seen or experienced it.

I remember Christian Peters. Drafted by the Patriots in ‘96. That’s what started Bill Parcells muttering about “buying the groceries” when the Krafts cut him before training camp!

The guy was a stud playing college at Nebraska but a total bust in the NFL because of his out of control behavior. He was drafted by the Rams with the 4th or 5th pick in the first round.

I sure you can’t sit your $20 million dollar player without getting a nasty-gram from the GM.

Nonsense. NU could have put you or me at RB and still won the NC. They were that good.

Besides, NU was deep at RB and could have played a half dozen who were as good or almost as good as Philips.

I remember Dick Vermeil flying across the state to greet him when he was released from prison. Several times he vouched for him saying “He’s a good kid”.i
