It's Official: The Rams Are Going to L.A.

It's over.

The NFL owners voted tonight to allow Stan Kroenke to move the Rams to Los Angeles, ending the team‘s 21-year run in St. Louis. The owners also agreed to let the San Diego Chargers explore a move to the same facility, in suburban Inglewood, which is south of L.A.

The Rams will be gone in time for next year's season.

You make a good point, dfwgator. In many ways the relationship between a sports franchise and a city parallels that of the course of a failed marriage. From the first tentative steps, the giving of gifts to look more inviting, the initial exuberance of the union that gives way to the reality of the everyday relationship, and finally the separation when one of the partners (usually the one that was initially pursued) decides that the magic of their bond is no more and that another would make a more suitable partner.
Maybe St. Louis would have more luck seeking redress in divorce court...

They had some glory in LA though they were usually perennially 2nd or 3rd best.

Yes, and all of this about stadiums has me fed up and a major reason why I did not watch much of the NFL this year.

These teams have stadiums, improve them if anything.

One can look it up, the oldest actual functioning team in the NFL which was a pre-NFL team are the Cardinals. So, they were of course, in Chicago, St. Louis and now in Arizona.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arizona_Cardinals

And one can read that perhaps, this 118 year old team had a history even before being the Chicago Cardinals. A team that has also had a lot of downs.

They are going back to where they started from.

Wasn’t the team the Cleveland Rams before they moved to LA?

With 8 regular season home games you don’t need a stadium 365 days a year. In fact it is uneconomic.

Maybe you can educate Jerry Jones about that.

AT&T Stadium is booked for numerous and varied events during the year. State high school football playoffs, college football games, moto-cross, monster trucks, concerts, etc.

And Jerry Jones would not do better with 8 additional NFL games instead of 8 high school games and moto-cross?

Stadiums don’t need 2 NFL teams but they will do better.

I wonder if Ferguson had anything to do with ownership’s wanting to leave St Louis?

The stadium appears to be situated within an area that could be “exposed” to street crimes and such, making it a precarious situation for fans on game days.

Any Rams fans who can tell me I’m wrong? Just wondering....

I am cynical with regard to funding stadiums; i.e. taxpayer funds either direct or indirect are involved somewhere.

At least this time they had the courtesy of giving prior notice, unlike Art Modell or Robert Irsay.

I agree that cities shouldn't be building stadiums. As to the timing issue, however, Irsay was facing seizure of the team through eminent domain. Had he waited 'till morning, the crooked pols would have stolen his team. And the City of Baltimore would be the proud owner of an NFL franchise, which would probably be renamed for Freddie Gray by now.

These teams have no faith and no loyalty whatsoever

And will be the first to whine when attendance drops and then will repeat cycle of taking home town hostage over funding, stadium, etc.

No more than any other business.

Freeway off ramps on ramps, roads, sewers all paid from Stadium taxes. This is the proper role of government.

No public monies for the actual Stadium is the reason there has been no NFL football in Los Angeles for 20 years.

It has become a bedrock of Los Angeles politics.

Major League Soccer’s LAFC or Los Angeles Football Club’s 25k seat stadium is also privately funded.

I think this is perhaps the only sane consensus public policy in Los Angeles.

” There’s a whole generation in LA that has never had their own team.”

... and a good percentage of that “new generation” are soccer fans...

Seriously, I had a friend — rabid Steelers fan who relocated to LA — this was after the Rams left (and after the Raiders returned to The Bay). I asked him if he missed professional football. He pointed to his cable box and said, “I can watch 2 NFL games and still have the afternoon.” I guess that meant that it was just ‘entertainment’?

Well, Inglewood is nearly the same demographic as Ferguson, so I doubt your hypothesis.
